HEFEI, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese scientists have established a quantum computer prototype named "Jiuzhang 2.0" with 113 detected photons, achieving major breakthroughs in quantum computational speedup.

In the study, Gaussian boson sampling (GBS), a classical simulation algorithm, was used to provide a highly efficient way of demonstrating quantum computational speedup in solving some well-defined tasks.

With 113 detected photons, "Jiuzhang 2.0" can implement large-scale GBS septillion times faster than the world's fastest existing supercomputer.

The study, led by the renowned Chinese quantum physicist Pan Jianwei, was published online in the journal Physical Review Letters on Monday Beijing Time.

HEFEI, Oct. 26 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese research team has successfully designed a 66-qubit programmable superconducting quantum computing system named "Zuchongzhi 2.1," significantly enhancing the quantum computational advantage.

The achievement marks that China has become the first country to achieve quantum computational advantage in two mainstream technical routes.

The study was led by renowned Chinese quantum physicist Pan Jianwei and was published online on Monday Beijing Time in the journal Physical Review Letters and Science Bulletin. ■

Two experimental quantum computers tackle the most complex problems yet, suggesting an end to the debate on whether quantum “primacy”—the point at which a quantum computer outperforms the best possible classical computer—can be reached.

In a dramatic tour de force, teams led by Jian-Wei Pan at the University of Science and Technology of China have shown, in two separate studies, remarkable progress toward the demonstration of quantum primacy [1, 2]. Quantum primacy is the goal of showing that a programmable quantum computer solves a computational problem that is currently infeasible for nonquantum, or “classical,” computers [3]. Impressive recent experiments led to claims that this point has been reached [4], but they prompted debates on whether the demonstrated quantum computation was truly beyond the reach of existing classical computers. It has been suggested, for example, that these experiments didn’t involve a comparison with the best possible classical algorithms or implementations [5]. The two major results by the Pan group push experimental quantum computing to far larger problem sizes, making it much harder to find classical algorithms and classical computers that can keep up. The results take us further toward trusting claims that we have indeed reached the age of computational quantum primacy.

Chinese research teams have achieved a significant progress in superconducting quantum computing and light-based quantum computing, making China the only country in the world that has reached "quantum supremacy" in both physical systems.

The research team from CAS Center for Excellence in Quantum Information and Quantum Physics has constructed a 66-qubit programmable superconducting quantum computer prototype naming it Zu Chongzhi-2, after the noted 5th century Chinese mathematician and astronomer, CCTV reported on Tuesday.

Zu Chongzhi-2 is 10 million times faster than the current fastest supercomputer and its calculation complexity is more than 1 million times higher than Google's Sycamore processor, which is the first time that China has reached the quantum computing superiority milestone in the superconducting system.

Meanwhile, another research team has built a new light-based quantum computer prototype, Jiuzhang-2, with 113 photons and 144 modes, which can deal with specific problems at a speed of tens of billions of times faster than a supercomputer, and enhanced the programming computing capability of the light-based quantum computing prototype.

Previously, a Chinese research team from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) successfully designed Zu Chongzhi, a 62-qubit programmable superconducting quantum processor in May.

China basiclly leave the US in the dust, and the distance between the two can only be described by a Chinese quantum supercomputer :rofl:

No wonder Ancient book like I-Ching has already predicted that China will lead the world for the next 1000 years, and lead human civilization to the next level, age of inter-planet, or even inter-system, if not inter-galaxy travelling.:enjoy::o:

it's just a machine designed to solve one problem. until it can be programmed it's still pretty worthless.

What does all this mean?

Quantum computers are the next generation of supercomputers, far more powerful than today's supercomputers. Whoever unlocks this technology first gains superpowers. Think about a super brain that can solve the most complex problems related to the technologies of the future.

China and the US have been in a race to achieve quantum computing. Google debuted a quantum computer last year but these Chinese quantum computers are more powerful.

You guys are aiming incredibly low. After the 53 qubit Sycamore was built in 2019 Google said the next one they will build will have 1,000,000.

They said that but have not delivered it so let's not cash that cheque. So far the Chinese programs have delivered two quantum machines more than the 53 qubits of Google's. One at over 60 qubits and now another that is over 100 qubits.

I'm sure Google will create another one that is faster. This is just how it works. Google's approach is different to the CAS approaches. It is good competition for computing.

So far the other important side of quantum computing is stuck for both. Neither USA or China have yet found a way to make quantum computers perform conventional problem solving which supercomputers are able to. All the quantum machines for now are only capable of solving single problems designed for them but take supercomputers hundreds or thousands of years or more as they claim.
