Chinese President Xi Jinping has told Sheikh Hasina his country wants a better strategic relationship with Bangladesh.
The prime minister met the Chinese leader on Tuesday, the fifth day of her official visit, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque told reporters after the meeting that President Xi told Hasina the ties between the two nations would advance much further.
“He believes China and Bangladesh have a strategic partnership and the Chinese government will work to further this relation,” he said.
Xi expressed satisfaction over the military cooperation and hoped that strategic relations between the two forces would be further deepened.
He said the ties between China and Bangladesh were historical and recalled Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s visit to China in 1952.
The Chinese president spoke of importing jute and jute-based products from Bangladesh to close the trade gap between the countries.
He promised Hasina that China would provide unconditional aid to Bangladesh to improve its agriculture.
Xi said Hasina was an old friend of the Chinese people and Bangladesh was a close and friendly nation.
He said there were different models of democracy in different countries and if anyone thinks there is a standard model for democracy they are wrong.
The president told Hasina about China’s initiative to establish the new trade routes ‘Silk Route Economic Belt’ and ‘21st Century Maritime Silk Route’.
These routes will go through or past Bangladesh and India and reach Africa.
Hasina thanked the Chinese president for the initiative.
The prime minister also held a meeting with the People's Political Consultative Conference President Yu Zhengsheng.
Yu praised Bangladesh’s economic and political progress. He said Bangladesh would move forward under Hasina’s leadership.
