Chinese President Nixes Kathmandu Visit Amid Thaw in Indo-Nepalese Relations

ASIA & PACIFIC 14:44 07.09.2016

Chinese President Xi Jinping has cancelled his trip to Nepal due to the country's Prime Minister’s pro-India approach and Nepal’s disinterest in fulfilling commitments to its northern neighbor.

In a major setback for Sino-Nepalese relations, Chinese President Xi Jinping has decided to cancel a planned trip to Nepal. Xi Jinping was expected to visit the communist-run Himalayan democracy in October after the BRICS Summit in Goa, India.

According to sources in the Nepalese government, China is unhappy with the present Nepalese government for three reasons. Firstly, the Maoist leadership of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal (Prachanda) has clearly indicated that it will not implement the agreements finalized during the previous government, led by Marxist-Leninist former Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli. Prachanda has indicated that it will review all the agreements which were finalized during the previous administration, a move which as annoyed the Chinese leadership.

Another reason for the snub is the Prachanda government’s lack of enthusiasm towards China’s ambitious One Belt One Road project. The Chinese government had asked for assurances about Nepal’s commitment to the project during Nepalese Deputy Prime Minister K. B. Mahara’s visit to Beijing.

Thirdly, Prachanda’s decision to visit India ahead of Xi Jinping’s proposed visit to Nepal has annoyed the Chinese establishment. He will visit India in September for a three-day tour which is expected to mark the return of normalcy to India-Nepal relations.

In fact, ever since the fall of K. P. Sharma Oli’s government, China has been unhappy with the emerging situation in Nepal: the country's leadership is tilted towards India.

Prachanda’s government is supported by Nepalese Congress and the United Democratic Madhesi Front; both parties have cordial relations with the Indian government. Therefore, China is skeptical of the new government in Nepal.

IMHO
  1. Its true that new PM Prachanda wishes to have better relation with India
  2. But Prachanda will not discourage China completely
  3. India-Nepal relationship did hit rock bottom during Oli days but now it seems to gaining back the normalcy
  4. I believe there is something more bcz of which Prez Xi might have cancelled his visit.
  5. Its strange that Sputnik is reporting this and not by other Indian media.
  6. China - Nepal gas cooperation was in upswing and i read here
KATHMANDU, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The establishment of a China-Nepal-India economic corridor will help secure economic prosperity of the entire Asian region through enhancing cooperation on trade, tourism, energy and connectivity, experts said here on Wednesday.

The concept of establishing China-Nepal-India economic corridor is now gaining momentum. Establishment of such corridor will promote people-to-people and institution-to-institution contacts of the three neighbouring countries. This is more important to Nepal which is sandwiched between the two emerging countries,"

Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Wu Chuntai, said that the China-Nepal-India Economic Corridor is not a sole strategy of China, but it's for creating win-win cooperation among the three countries.

So its a bit strange why its a cancellation suddenly. Bcz i thought they might have discussed and taken this forward

I think China should push for China-Nepal-India transport corridor. it will work in the long run
Do you really think China do something because they want to help them? Look at Africa and what they did with them. Hell even forget Africa, look at India, and how the chinese exploited the local industries with Cheap pen, pencil, gadgets and other stuff. Only recently people stopped buying Chinese stuff. They look for places so they can dump their cheap materials, so they can exploit the market and capture it.

Its utterly stupid and pathetic to blame the chinese because they make pencils and gadgets. If you had an ounce of ability and knowhow you could do it yourself. I am tired of these whining fellow Indians who for 70 years have FAILED to educate their own countrymen or feed them properly or have the innovative skills to start manufacturing even simple everyday things, endlessly waiting for this phantom called TOT to rescue them from their innate failures.
Indians cannot absorb technology as other cultures have in a fairly quick time frame, they wait and wait and whine and plead that someone else will show them how to make a pencil or a chair. They buy the machines made elsewhere to make crayons and then spend 50 years chanting and praying and shouting how advanced are compared to the Neanderthals. Its stupid and craven.

I am sorry that you took my post as something against the Chinese. I have no hard feelings for them for what they do. Their country their rules and its upto the other country itself on how they prevent the chinese. As for my whining, I hate when i see duplicate chinese NATARAJ Pencils are flooded in the market, I hate when i see BoroPlus, Boroline, Apsara, mobile phones and even the crackers are Chinese made. GOI have banned its entry and informed the Chinese govt way before, yet they never stopped and flooded the market with cheap duplicates. Every country has some buisness ethics, chinese don't, they copy and they flood the market, that is not something I will be praising.

More appropriate headline should be:

"Chinese President Nixes Kathmandu Visit Amid RAW in Indo-Nepalese Relations". :partay:

Dude, do not act like Pakistanis.

A China-Nepal-India transport corridor is not economically feasible due to geography and geology.

The limitations of geography and logistics is something which would kick Pakistanis in teeth when they would find themselves in bondage of Chinese, riddled with Chinese loans taken for a highway passing through Karakorum range which is unusable for half an year and open in a desert. I do not argue with them because they are stupid and think that their "Iron brother" would defeat geography and logistics. Fools are in for a nasty surprise down the line.

Best of luck to my Nepalese brothers, I wish their country to be prosperous in the future and not stuck in the third world status like india.

Haww, I thought Chinese armored corps are stationed right across the border of Nepal, and they will roll down the mountains and invade India at the first green signals by Prachanda, and liberate us from the oppressive hindutwa regime. :(

Now those disheartened soldiers have to roll down the other side. Feeling sad. :(
