Chinese military deploys seized vehicles in border areas - The Economic Times

BEIJING: Chinese military has deployed a large number of vehicles seized in the current anti-graft campaign to frontier areas including Tibet which borders India to improve the fighting capability of the troops.

All the vehicles which were found in violation during the anti-graft campaign until September have been handed to troops stationed in remote and border areas under harsh conditions such as Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and Tibet, Chinese army newspaper the PLA Daily's website 81.cn said.

The report did not specify the number of vehicles or their models but said the transfer was ordered by a military meeting in June, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The campaign is helping troops improve their fighting capability, the report said.

It said the vehicles have been coated with camouflage paint and will be used for military training, war-time preparation and search and rescue purposes.

Vehicles in the military is a key area of the anti-corruption campaign. Military regulation holds that only officers above a certain ranking can have access to passenger cars.

But violations in recent years have been on the rise. Since the campaign started in late 2012, the military has said luxury cars should not have military plates and banned troops from buying foreign made vehicles.

The campaign to seize vehicles started after Chinese President Xi Jinping took over power in 2013 after which the military adopted new military vehicle plates starting from May 1 annulling those issued previously to crack down on the creation, sale and use of counterfeit military vehicle plates and root out loopholes in military vehicle management.

The new rules also barred eligibility of several types of vehicles for the new plates, including luxury cars, private vehicles, local government vehicles and vehicles for local officials who hold concurrent positions in the PLA or the armed police forces.

The new measure for the world's largest army with over 2.3 million personnel were implemented after Xi asked the military to cut down luxury banquets and observe austerity.

Xi also carried out massive anti-corruption campaign in the ruling Communist Party of China, (CPC) and the military.

While 80 top officials of the party including top senior leaders like Zhou Yangkong in the previous administration were punished besides thousands of officials.

Anti-corruption investigations have been launched against 40 top military officials including highly placed Generals.

Any ideas on what kind of civilian vehicles the PLA would actually deploy for operational use?

China announces a new license plate system for vehicles belonging to the military and armed police. Under new regulations, luxury brands belonging to global auto makers from BMW to Bentley will not be eligible to receive new military license plates, unless they are registered as military property.

A directive is issued by China’s State Council ordering its military to purchase only domestically branded cars. The directive comes on top of new rules announced last year that tighten the use of military license plates on luxury vehicles, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. The State Council’s directive also includes a slew of new measures such as a centralized system for military-car purchases, tamping down on the extravagance of military offices and housing, and limiting expenses on events, business trips, and banquets, and banning gifts.

The People's Liberation Army Daily said an order issued in June mandated all vehicles caught up in the sweep would be sent to border units in Tibet, Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia.

"As of the end of September, these vehicles have all been assigned to border units in remote and difficult regions," it said, without giving any numbers or details of the types of vehicles sent to border areas.

The vehicles, which have all been painted with the letters "Border Protection Duty", will be used for training, disaster relief and patrol work, the paper said.

The crackdown on military cars used in violation of the rules has been "effectively managed" and "achieved initial results", it said.

Would love to see an Audi A4 in military camo and being used for patrols!

(that said, I can see a Toyota land Cruiser in the background so a few of these could easily be used for such roles but most of the vehicles seem to be saloons so I doubt they will ever be used in such a role).
