Chinese General holds talks with Australian defense minister

  CANBERRA, May 13 (Xinhua) -- General Guo Boxiong, vice-chairman of China's Central Military Commission held talks with Australian defense minister John Faulkner here on Thursday.

  Guo said China and Australia are important countries in Asia- Pacific region that safeguard peace and stability of world and the region. Promoting mutual prosperity and development are common aspiration and responsibility of both countries.

  Guo said China highlights Sino-Australian relations, and is willing to make joint efforts with Australia to implement the consensus reached by the leaders of both countries, regard and develop such bilateral relations at strategic height and from long- term perspective.

  On the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit, China is willing to work with Australia to strengthen dialogue, mutual trust and cooperation, respect each other's core interests and properly handle sensitive issues, promote mutually beneficial cooperation and its healthy and stable development, he said.

  Faulkner said Australia welcomes China's development, praising China for maintaining global and regional stability and for its economic development. He said Sino-Australian relations are all the more crucial under the complex and changeable international situation.

  Both sides agreed to maintain visits between the leaders and strategic consultations, and enhance cooperation in various areas.

  On Thursday morning, Guo also met with Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith.

  Invited by Faulkner, Guo has arrived on Tuesday at Sydney for an official visit. He has visited Australian Army forces and the Australian Defence College.
