ZTE hits 30.8Gbps mobile speeds in Malaysia

The Malaysian Book of Records has recognised ICT provider ZTE for achieving the “fastest mobile speeds” at 30.8Gbps with 5G-Advanced (5G-A) during a live trial conducted in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.

ZTE partnered with CelcomDigi Berhad and U Mobile to accomplish this feat.

In addition to this new benchmark, the partners recorded individual users experiencing speeds of up to 8.5Gbps.

"ZTE's dedication to innovation is reflected through our 5G and 5G-A use cases, where, together with our partners Celcomdigi and U Mobile, we have achieved the milestone performances,” says ZTE Malaysia CEO Steven Ge.

“We are excited to bring more exciting use cases as we tailor our solutions to meet the unique demands of Malaysia's 5G strategy and beyond."

Aside from this achievement, people visiting the CelcomDigi, U Mobile, and ZTE 5G-A Pavilion located outside Stadium Sarawak will also have the opportunity to experience 5G-A enhanced XR (extended reality) firsthand.

By using the 5G-A powered 360° cameras installed at various locations inside the stadium, visitors can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the stadium's action by simply putting on a pair of VR goggles.

U Mobile taps ZTE for fast rollout of Malaysia's second 5G network

U Mobile has signed an MoU signed with Chinese vendor ZTE to collaborate on fast 5G deployment, with an eye on future evolution to 5G-Advanced, in the telco's latest play to become Malaysia's second 5G network operator.

Under the MoU announced on Friday, U Mobile will deploy ZTE’s RAN hardware and software for the second 5G network. U Mobile said it will also continue to work with ZTE on various R&D initiatives beyond 5G, including evolution towards 5G-A and 6G.

U Mobile and ZTE will also collaborate on network design, planning, rollout, operations and optimisation for the second 5G network, as well as financing solutions that enable fast rollout and cost efficiency, said U Mobile CEO Woon Ooi Yuen.

“We believe ZTE’s cutting-edge technologies and global insights will enable us to build a second 5G network promptly and efficiently, while preparing our network for future technologies designed to fulfil the needs of consumers and enterprises,” he said in a statement.

The Malaysian government has been planning to launch a second 5G wholesale network to compete with existing 5G operator Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) since May 2023. Telcos that have taken an ownership stake in DNB are allowed to sell that stake in order to take a stake in the second 5G network. They are not allowed to own stakes in both.

Malaysia’s Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo has said the process of selecting an operator to switch from DNB to the second network won’t be completed by the end of this year. However, U Mobile has been signing a blitz of partnership deals to make its case that it should get the nod to build the second network, of which the ZTE MoU is the most recent example.

At the start of this month, U Mobile signed an MoU with AmBank Group, who will provide financing solutions to cover the cost of rolling out the second 5G network.

Last month, U Mobile signed an MoU with Time dotCom to develop customised backhaul solutions using Time’s fibre backhaul network to support U Mobile’s 5G deployment strategy, and also formed partnerships with eight state-backed network facility provider companies (SBCs) from the PPIT Consortium to streamline the 5G rollout process.

U Mobile has also signed tower-related MoUs with PPIT Consortium member EdgePoint Towers and Edotco (whose subsidiary Yiked Bina is also a consortium member) to further its 5G ambitions.

Two weeks ago, U Mobile and ZTE – along with telco CelcomDigi – said they will showcase the power of 5G-A this coming weekend by running a live TV broadcast of the opening ceremony of the 2024 Sukma Games over a 5G-A RAN.
