In 2017 alone, Chinese defence spending rose by a massive 5.6%, totalling a staggering £168 billion, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

China’s defence budget stands well over three times as much as Russia’s or India’s, though it is still much lower than the £450bn the US spends, according to SIPRI.

But its gigantic military strides is forcing the US to sit up and take notice, reports The Times of India.

Douglas Barrie, senior fellow for military aerospace at the International Institute for Strategic Studies said: “We [the West] had an environment where we could do whatever we wanted in the air, and what the Chinese have done is to say you no longer can.”

Chinese advances means the US’s role as a global policeman is “fading”.

For a couple of million pounds, China’s air-to-air missiles could annihilate a £100 million US aircraft – a cost effective way of trying to level the playing field with the US.

The US Air Force awarded a half-billion-dollar contract to supply close allies with Raytheon Inc’s latest long range air-to-air missile, capable of hitting enemy planes from 100 miles away.

The Meteor, a new European equivalent, could be even more deadly.

But China’s latest offering, the PL-15, has a greater range than both of them.

The PL-15 reportedly also supports an active electronically-scanned array radar that makes evasion difficult for the most agile of fighter jets.

Another Chinese air-to-air weapon in development, provisionally known as PL-XX, could strike slow-moving airborne warning and control systems, the flying neural centres of US air warfare from as far away as 300 miles.

And China’s new PL-10 missile is comparable to the best “fire-and-forget” equivalents, meaning any dogfight would likely end with a so-called mutual kill, a significant deterrent, it adds.

In a recent address to Hudson Institute in Washington, Michael Griffin, undersecretary of defence for research and engineering, said: “In the United States we’ve been on holiday for 25 years and maybe a little bit more.

“We failed to continue to fund the practices that had gotten us where we were, which was at the very top of the technological heap.”
