China's research and development has made notable progress in the past five years due to increases in spending, Minister of Science and Technology Wan Gang said Tuesday.

National spending on research and development is estimated to reach about 1.76 trillion yuan (269.6 billion US dollars) in 2017, up 70.9 percent from 2012, Wan said at a national conference.

The expenditure in research and development in 2017 accounted for 2.15 percent of GDP, catching up with the average 2.1 percent of 15 of the nations in the European Union, according to the minister.

About 136,000 technology firms contributed to more than half the research and development spending.

Citing the breakthroughs made in quantum communication and superconducting material, Wan noted that China's comprehensive strength in scientific research had improved significantly in the past five years.

The number of research articles written by Chinese scientists reached the world's second most, and the number of articles being referred to overtook Germany and Britain to be the world's second most in 2017.

"The number of patent applications the country received and that of those granted annually have been the largest across the world," Wan said.

.
A lot of investment is going into cutting edge research and a lot of investment is going into catching up on major technologies, but cutting out the steps others have found before because the knowledge is out there. These two fold reasons are why rapid developments are happening in china, and it is only a matter of time china is at the same levels as other advanced nations. An example of this is the aerospace engine sector. once you see an indigenous engine on the C-919 Airliner as the standard export engine, you will know china is confident in its own technology as world class.

Chinese enterprise develops self-healing anti-corrosion paint additive

(People's Daily Online) 16:52, January 11, 2018

POLY GE, a self-healing anti-corrosion paint additive which can ensure coating materials’ anti-corrosion ability and prolong the service life, has been successfully developed by a Chinese enterprise, China News reported on Jan. 10.

The paint additive, developed by Shandong GEWU New Material Technology Co., Ltd, has passed technical inspections of various authoritative testing institutes in China, including the Institute of Metal Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

POLY GE, an environment-friendly, self-healing anti-corrosion paint additive, can effectively protect against corrosion under complex conditions, prolonging the service life of the material and reducing economic losses and the accident rates caused by corrosion.

In addition, the self-healing anti-corrosion paint is advantageous over traditional paint, as it can achieve automatic restoration after the coating is damaged, preventing it from further corrosion and terminate corrosion.

Statistics show that corrosion causes $700-billion in global losses each year, accounting for 2-4 percent of the world’s GDP, more than 6 times of that caused by natural disasters including earthquakes, typhoons, and floods.

The additive is expected to play a significant role in modern industry, transportation, energy industry, and oceanographic engineering.

How did you summarize?

Logical inference from all the accumulated posts, I guess. Reflecting your (and your countrymen' logic such as F22 Raptor) on India.
