China's ownership of new energy vehicles (NEVs) reached 7.84 million by the end of 2021, an increase of 2.92 million, or 59.25 percent, from 2020 after excluding the number of scrapped vehicles, according to data released Wednesday by China's Ministry of Public Security.

Among them, the ownership of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) reached 6.4 million, accounting for 81.63 percent of the total number of NEVs.

Nearly 8 million NEVs may seem like a large number, but this represents only 2.6 percent of China's total vehicle fleet, implying huge room for growth.

By the end of 2021, China had 302 million vehicles, and if two-wheeled motor vehicles are counted, that number is 395 million, the data shows.

The number of newly registered NEVs in 2021 was 2.95 million, accounting for 11.25 percent of the total number of newly registered vehicles, an increase of 1.78 million, or 151.61 percent, compared with the previous year.

It is worth noting that in 2017, the number of newly registered NEVs in China was only 650,000.

By the end of last year, 79 cities in China had more than 1 million vehicles, nine more than at the end of 2020. Thirty-five of these cities had more than 2 million vehicles, and 20 cities had more than 3 million.

Beijing, Chengdu and Chongqing have more than 5 million vehicles, Suzhou, Shanghai, Zhengzhou and Xi'an more than 4 million, and 13 cities including Wuhan, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Tianjin, Hangzhou and Guangzhou more than 3 million.

China's new energy passenger car sales in 2021 were 3.334 million units, up 167.5 percent year-on-year, according to data released yesterday by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Among them, BEV sales were 2.734 million units, up 173.5 percent year-on-year, and plug-in hybrid sales were 600,000 units, up 143.2 percent year-on-year.

The tipping point will come as soon as 2025 and hopefully there will be further breakthroughs in battery tech to further extend ranges of these vehicles and get rid of range anxiety issues once and for all. In the long run EV companies which offers more flexibility in terms ability to upgrade and/or swap out degraded battery pack are better positioned to take advantage of the evolving tech and market place.

Another aspect, people might be overlooking is the ease rather lack for maintenance needed on the EV's which will also contribute in their popularity, no more oil changes or hundred other possible parts breaking down.

This is why a hybrid is not a good choice. You would have to deal with both the EV and ICE parts maintenance. That's just crazy.

CATL has been dominating the Chinese power battery market and did so for the full year 2021.

The Tesla, NIO supplier has 80.51 GWh of power batteries installed in China for the full year 2021, capturing a 52.1 percent market share, according to data released yesterday by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).

In 2021, the cumulative installed base of power batteries in China was 154.5 GWh, up 142.8 percent year-on-year.

BYD ranks second with 25.06 GWh of power batteries installed in 2021, with a 16.2 percent market share.

CALB ranks third with a 5.9 percent market share with 9.05 GWh installed in 2021.

Gotion High-Tech and LG Energy Solution ranked fourth and fifth with 5.2 percent and 4.0 percent shares, respectively.

Among the top five, CALB and LG Energy Solution are the ones to watch for the most.

Late last month, local media outlet 36kr reported that XPeng Motors planned to bring in CALB as its new primary battery supplier in addition to CATL.

Cailian later quoted XPeng sources as suggesting that the report was true, saying that the supply chain of components needed for vehicle production needs to be constantly improved to better ensure supply and yield, and to more accurately predict delivery lead times.

XPeng's main battery supplier is currently CATL, and 36kr reports that XPeng's chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng and CATL founder and chairman Robin Zeng had a mid-year meeting in which they argued, with Zeng even walking out of the meeting at the height of the heat in order to calm down for more than 10 minutes.

The argument was over He's plan to bring in CALB as the new main battery supplier, which would cut into CATL's share of supply. CALB, on the other hand, is seen by CATL as a serious threat to its nemesis.

Local news portal Sina quoted a CATL source as saying that the quarrel was completely false, without providing any further details.

It is worth noting that CATL has previously begun to take action against potential threats from CALB.

On July 21, 2021, CATL announced that it had formally sued CALB for patent infringement, claiming that CALB's allegedly infringing batteries are on tens of thousands of vehicles.

LG Energy Solution recently launched the process for its initial public offering in South Korea, with plans to raise up to $10.8 billion.

CATL maintained its dominant position in the global electric vehicle battery market with a 31.8 percent share from January to November, according to data released late last month by South Korean market research firm SNE Research.

CATL's share was 11.3 percentage points higher than second-place LG Energy Solution's 20.5 percent.

Given the apparently high order backlog and other factors, LG Energy Solution's share of the global electric vehicle battery market could surpass CATL's, the company's CEO Kwon Young-soo, said on January 10.

Kwon made the remarks in an online press release about the company's upcoming IPO, emphasizing LG Energy Solution's dominance in terms of intellectual property and diversity of its foreign customer base.

In December, CATL held 55.6 percent of the Chinese power battery market, followed by BYD at 14.2 percent, CALB at 5.9 percent, Gotion at 5.4 percent and LG Energy Solution at 3.4 percent, according to CABIA.

The test driver taking the car for trial run under normal driving condition, city area, high way, 14-21 degrees with heater on. 1008km NEDC and under their trial run, it achieved 816km range. Very impressive. The first EV to conquer the range fear.

The sharing of charging places will increase geographic access to all models. Very much like a petrol station. Standardization is important.
