WASHINGTON:Chinahas over the past several decades significantly increased itsdefence budgetwhich is now more than three times that ofIndiaand the country could pose a threat to the US security interest in the region, thePentagonhas said.

China's official defence budget last year was USD 136.3 billion while that of India was USD 38.2 billion, the Pentagon said today in its annual report to the Congress based on its annual assessment of military and security developments involving the giant Asian country.

China has significantly increased its defence budget over the past several decades and now has reached a position to pose threat to the American national security interest in the region, the report said.

Having established a modern defence industry, China has now began exporting arms withPakistanbeing its top importer.

"Pakistan remains China's primary customer for conventional weapons," the Pentagon said yesterday.

Russia's national defence budget the same year was USD 76.3 million and that of Japan was USD 47.6 billion, whereas South Korea's annual defence budget last year was USD 33.4 billion and Taiwan's was USD 10.3 billion, the Pentagon said.

From 2009 to 2013, China signed about USD 14 billion in arms export agreements for conventional weapons systems worldwide, ranging from general purpose materiel to major weapons systems.

China engages in both arms sales and defence industrial cooperation with Islamabad, including F-22P frigates with helicopters, K-8 jet trainers, F-7 fighter aircraft, early warning and control aircraft, main battle tank production, air-to-air missiles, and anti-ship cruise missiles, it said.

"In June 2014, Pakistan started co-producing the first two of fifty Block 2 JF-17s, which is an upgraded version of the Block I JF-17," it said.

In 2014 and the coming years, China's arms exports will likely to increase modestly as China's domestic defence industry improves. Chinese defence firms are marketing and selling arms throughout the world with the bulk of their sales to the Asia-Pacific and Sub-Saharan African regions.

China is the largest supplier of arms to theSub-Saharan Africa region, which was China's second highest sales region between 2009-2013 with about USD 4 billion in sales, it said.

Sub-Saharan African countries view China as a provider of low-cost weapons with generally fewer end-use monitoring conditions relative to other arms suppliers.

China tends to be relatively flexible with regard to payment arrangements. China's top customers in this region are South Sudan, Sudan and Ethiopia, it added.

Serious problem for India. Steps must be taken to match Chinese defense budget over this decade. Time to increase defense budget . Govt should wake up and smell the coffee How can you fight two front war with tiny weapons ?

US already creating a lots of noise about India and China in past two days.
It seems they are too uncomfortable with the next visit of Indian PM in to China.

We know what we are doing ,we dont need others advice for our foreign policy

just look at the size of china economy and its hostile environment to all its neighbors. so inorder to deal all these issues more defence budget is required for them.

In the coming years this gap is going to decrease because chinese economy is slowing .according to imf, in the years to come chinese economy will grow at around 6 percent .some analysts says that is may even slow down to 5%. While indian economy is going to accelerate to 9-10%. so no need to worry.

Military budget are measured usually as a % of GDP, China economy is about 5 times the size of Indian economy thus China is spend a much lower % of GDP on its military. If India wants to match Chinese spending it better triple what it currently spends on the military, but at what cost?

Even if China grows at 5%, it will still add more economic output than India's 10%, 5% of 10 trillion is 500 billion, 10% of 2 trillion is 200 billion in comparison. China will still continue to outperform India and thus the military budget side also.

China's GDP is 5 times bigger than India's.

Yet our defense spending is only 3 times more?

We don't spend enough as a percentage of GDP and government budget.

Ok its defence budget is $136 billion so? US has more than 5 times the budget that China has. China's GDP (nominal) is $11.212 trillion where as India's is $2.308 trillion if we keep this in mind then China budget should be some where near $200 billion.
OK I understand China is becoming a threat to USA but I don't understand whats the point in comparing it with India? Unless USA wants India to increase its defence budget as well.

yes, USA dose. india are emotional and paranoid,USA knows how to take advatage of indias traits of character as it has been doing for decades.

The US is doing China a favour, drum up the threat and make india spend more on military than infrastruture that will drive up the economy.

As China's Nominal GDP ($10 trillion) is fives times larger than that of India's ($2 trillion), I wonder what would happen in India if China raised its defence budget by five times?

It depends on threat perception I guess. China has many fronts to worry about. If china wants to keep its credible detterence against US, you.must keep up the spending. There are so many conflicts from Taiwan to South China Sea there are many front where chineese needs to keep vigil. Compared to that India only has two fronts to worry about. And with China, LAC issue is nothing that cant be solved. We have already in process to solve our boarder dispute with Bangladesh. I cant imagine a full blown clonflict between two nuclear powers when there is so much gain can be made on the economic front with better trade & co-operation. :coffee:

In my post I said our GDP is 5 times bigger, yet we are only spending 3 times more.

That means India is spending a considerably larger percentage of GDP on defence than China is.
