KFC has more than 4,000 branches in China and is often seen as a symbol of US influence in the country

Chinese state media has criticised anti-US protests outside KFC outlets across China as jingoistic, saying they do "a disservice to the nation".

The protesters are angry about an international tribunal ruling rejecting China's territorial claims in the South China Sea.

The case was brought by the Philippines, a US ally which has a competing claim in the area.

State newspapers said the authorities were "calling for rational patriotism".

'Get out of China, Kentucky and McDonalds', reads this banner

Not huge, but animated.

In recent days, small groups of protesters have gathered outside KFC outlets, starting in Hebei and spreading to other places including Changsha and Hangzhou, media reports said.

They have shouted anti-US slogans and held up banners with the words "Get out of China, KFC and McDonalds".

What have state media said?
The state Xinhua news agency said: "This is not the right way to express patriotism."

The China Daily newspaper said: "Instead of being patriotic, it is their jingoism that does a disservice to the spirit of devotion to the nation.

"Those who organise such activities without going through the necessary procedures and unlawfully harass others in the name of patriotism should be held accountable according to the law."

Both the China Daily and the People's Daily newspaper said police and media organisations were "calling for rational patriotism".

In China, protesting without seeking permission from the authorities is forbidden.

But what does KFC have to do with the tribunal?
Nothing. However, China has accused the US of encouraging its ally, the Philippines, to challenge China in the arbitration tribunal.

The tribunal ruled there was no evidence for China's claim of historic rights to the waters or resources within its "nine-dash line", and that it was violating the Philippines' sovereign rights with its operations there.

China has been engaged in vast amounts of construction on various disputed islands and its maritime authorities have been involved in altercations with Philippine fishermen in the Scarborough Shoal area.

China refused to participate in the proceedings and rejected the findings.

Is it just KFC?

No. Chinese netizens have also been sharing images online of people apparently smashing iPhones in protest over the ruling, or wearing scarves with patriotic slogans on them.

The Shanghaiist website reported that in Dalian a man wearing Nike shoes was attacked on the subway, supposedly because the wearing of American brands showed support for the US.

And the Philippines is also facing the wrath of some Chinese online, who are calling for a boycott of its famous mangoes and other exports.

China has a +$360 billion dollar trade surplus with the U.S

they shouldn't try this boycotting crap.

unless they are willing to suffer the same.

Interestingly, I see more KFC and Starbucks in Chengdu,China than MacDonald's. I thought MacDonald's would be the more popular one everywhere in the world.

Seems like the statistics proved it.

LOL ... my friend, :pop: China anti-KFC movement is not as easy as we see ... in chaos some Chinese ppl paid by behind groups, that's not anti-U.S ... indeed anti-U.S might easily become anti-CCP riot in China, as far as i see CCP lost influences in Chinese public media, there controlled by many private corporations. Now CCP is stupid to abandon the domination of public media , so FOOL !

If U.S can win China, must not in military maybe in media influence !

I honestly don't think relations will improve unless Trump is made President. His whole campaign is about immigraition and trade particualy concerning China, but he's not a neo-con nor a crook like Hillary.

we need work out our differences in a peaceful way.

I feel like China is acting like Imperial Japan before the start of WW2. the need for resources might start a war.

KFC was the first American fast food franchise to enter Chinese market, they were well established years before MacDonald's were there.

BBC is always Full of Lies and Dishonest Spins

1) Every righteous readers beware, just in case if you still do not know -- these american slavelike BBC media actions.
BBC media is reverting back to their old habits of Lies and Dishonest Spins, and Maliciously and Venomously CHOKING and STRANGLING Chinese Economic Growth and especially brainwashing all Chinese who reside within China.

2) Since 4 June 1989 failed CIA fabricated Tian An Men Square coup d'etat, when it comes to China reporting, more and more major western reputable media are behaving like BBC, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Australian ABC and other Australian medias -- they are all Full of LIES and Venomous SPINS towards destroying China and Chinese everywhere.

3) Frankly, you feel that american slavelike media have successfully brainwashed many Chinese inside China, and converting those Chinese into HanJian ( National Traitors ) such as Shi Tao, Liu Xiao Bo, Wei Jing Sheng, and similar Chinese who are working for VoA, and many other Anti-Chinese overseas medias. .

4) It seems that Chinese major media are dominated by Liu Yun Shan and Jiang Ze Min and Zeng Qing Hong personnels.
Now obviously Jiang Ze Min and Zeng Qing Hong and their supporters are extremely corrupt and traitorous.
It also seems that Chairman XI is having trouble in removing and exterminating Jiang Ze Min and Zeng Qing Hong and their personnels inside China.

5) I hope all Patriotic Chinese will remember ~ if one day, United Satan usa is successful in their evil endeavors in causing the PRC to fall and to become disintegrated into much smaller and weaker nations, it will be our natural call of duty to hunt down and exterminate all these Chinese HanJian and all their immediate families.-- wherever they are hiding on Earth.

Chinese state media called for "rational patriotism" Wednesday amid anti-U.S. protests in recent days after an international tribunal ruled against Beijing over its territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Chinese nationalists have protested at KFC outlets and called for boycotts of the fast-food chain, while photos and video circulating online and on social media show people wearing scarves and banners with patriotic slogans smashing Apple iPhones in protest.

The case against China was brought by the Philippines, a U.S. ally, but the public anger has been fueled in part by Chinese government accusations that Washington encouraged Manila to oppose Beijing’s claims to the vast tracts of ocean.

Last week’s ruling by the United Nations tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands, found there was no legal basis for Beijing’s claim to most of the South China Sea. Despite overlapping claims, Beijing has been undertaking vast infrastructure projects in the area to secure natural resources and control strategic shipping lanes.

China's leadership tried to tamp down this week’s protests with demands in state media to leave foreign companies and their customers alone.

Tribunal rules against Chinese claims in South China Sea

USA TODAY

Why the ruling on the South China Sea is significant

“This is not the right way to express patriotism,” the state-run Xinhua News Agency said Wednesday. The China Daily newspaper called the protests “jingoism that does a disservice to the spirit of devotion to the nation.” The People's Daily, a mouthpiece for China's ruling Communist Party, urged calm and "rational patriotism."

“The Chinese public, as optimistic and positive as they are, are deeply patriotic and nationalistic, especially people who are younger,” James Roy of the research firm China Market Research Group, told the Associated Press.

KFC and Apple “are just closely associated with the U.S., and you are seeing people picking the closest symbol they can think of to demonstrate against,” he said.

KFC is China’s biggest restaurant chain with more than 5,000 outlets. It is overhauling its struggling business there after a food scandal and marketing missteps. Apple has faced a series of legal hurdles this year in China.

KFC has been in a steep decline in the US for the last 20'years. Not sure how many franchises they had at their peak but they have closed well over 1300 restaurants in the US in the last few years. Last I heard they were down to only 4300. They usually are near the bottom of the list in fast-food chain reviews. McDonalds seems to win the absolute bottom prize every year.

Maybe you demand better chains.

You made this low analysis, lol. You really need to make our Brother Sam happy?, the fact is:

1. KFC has more than 5,000 stores in China, about 11 stores were blocked or influenced by protest, no vandals.
2. They protest KFC because they really dislike American government. A large group of people dislike / hate American government. The most obvious symbol of America is KFC, they are everywhere, especially it's too far to protest before their Embassy.
3. Because giant Chinese companys are state-run, so those protestors thought KFC / Nike are also American state-owned company. Sanction those companys, means sanction American government, the logic is very simple. This group of folks won't be anti-CCP. The more mighty America behave, the more they will support CCP.
4. The protestors won't let American government hide. American government deny it control the Philippines action on arbitration case, but it fool nobody. You can correctly discover the manipulator.

I said mess right now happening in China ... and we see, CCP lost public media influence, the rumor is everywhere via wei-bo and wei-xin.

it's their human rights and freedom, we don't need anyone to tell them right or wrong !

we Chinese are living in a real and truely free nation ,everyone has the right to say and to do whatever until breach the laws in China.

we heard about a lot of groups of people were(are) doing anti-CCP campains for years time, be it on streets or internet , it's very rare to see anyone to get arrested.

Unlike the "Police state" whose' cops are shooting blacks for no reason and randomly !!!

It's great chance to clean up pro- America power in China, My bet on CCP
