China's 'Jade Rabbit' lunar rover declared dead: Report - The Times of India

BEIJING: China's troubled Jade Rabbit lunar roverhas died on the surface of the moon, state media reported on Wednesday, in a major setback for the country's ambitious space programme.
The rover "could not be restored to full function", the state-owned China News Servicesaid in a brief statement, after the country's first moon rover ran into mechanical problems last month.
The Jade Rabbit, or Yutuin Chinese, was deployed on the moon's surface on December 15. The landing was the first of its kind since the former Soviet Union's mission nearly four decades ago.
But the rover experienced a "mechanical control abnormality" late January, according to the official Xinhuanews agency, and has been unable to function since then.
The mission was a huge source of pride in China, the third country to successfully send a lunar rover to the moon, after the United States and the former Soviet Union.

Meanwhile a mechanical failure of a Chinese lunar mission turns to be the latest huge source of bride for the ever impotent Indian supapowa.
never knew we import chinese bride...
anyway... rip jack rabbit.. you were lively when you were alive..

The lander is still functional, is it not? The lander has a powerful UV sensor that supplies data to NOAA under a contract.

Was it "made in China"?

It might have some European and / or Russian parts in it. In 2011, the US Congress formally banned NASA from cooperating with China.

Chinese maal!

Why do Chinese goods work only for a month?

It's the moon, where temperature goes between like 100 C and -200 C. Nothing can survive long on the moon.

I think it was suppoed to last for a months time only? But poor thing couldnt survive harsh moon. But it was really good for a first lander mission and they will do better in future based on this one.

On an average US Mars rovers' worked for 5 years. I am sure Mars is more hostile than Moon

Based on the length of day and night cycle and the temperature differences between the two extremes, the radiation levels and enviornmental hazards, the moon is much more hostile to man made objects like rovers.

LOL,Chinese rover declared dead.
They could have used some other terminology.
