Replacing the Japan-US military alliance with a Treaty of Friendship would be a reasonable compensation for Washington.

Korea, frankly, acts more like a mature, normal country than Japan. Hence, they are less willing to play as a sidekick for US in its China-encirclement game. That's a long term, realistic policy on part of Korea.

Seoul does however support the military moves made by the US in the region.

Japan, on the other, has been not only kicking and screaming for a stronger US military positioning against China, but also attempting to pull other regional powers into a sort of crusade.

Of course, their economic futures will differ according to their posture toward China.

Recently Korean TV channels have a lot of shows and documentaries on China. I think it's ordered by their government.
