Chevy Volt Is Proven Fire-Proof by Massive Crash
With reports of EVs catching fire after crashes, and even the Chevrolet Volt itself facing this same problem early in its life, people were probably expecting it to burst into flames after a major accident.
Well, as accidents go, when you can barely distinguish what car was involved, you know you’ve got a big one on your hands. A speeding Toyota Camry recently failed to stop (for some reason), then hit a ditch, and then it literally ploughed straight into a Volt and a Jeep Grand Cherokee which were parked in the driveway of a house in Geneseo, New York.
The impact literally shattered the Volt, yet, despite the Camry’s engine bay catching fire after the crash, the battery pack of the Chevy remained intact and nothing bad happened afterward. To give you an idea of how violent the impact was, both cars which were sitting in the driveway, were moved no less than 8m (25 ft), and the crash made plaster walls on the back of the house crack - now that’s a crash!
Thankfully, and surprisingly, the driver of the Camry was alive after the crash, being taken to hospital with a concussion and a fractured hip. This unfortunate event is, however, welcome, as the the Volt needed needed to show that it was safe.
If we were to think outside the box for a second, maybe this move was planned by GM in order to prove that a ‘random’ Volt, involved in a suspiciously massive crash (given the kind of suburb the car was located in - who drives like that in the suburbs?) would not catch fire, and its battery pack would escape even the most severe of crashes unscathed.
