why do you argue for the sake arguing? Mao's great leap killed between 18M to 56M in 4 years. According to Chinese historian Yu Xiguang the toll was close to 56 million. (It is widely regarded by historians that The Great Leap resulted in tens of millions of deaths.[3] A lower-end estimate is 18 million, while research by Chinese historian Yu Xiguang suggests a death toll closer to 56 million.[4])
Comparing that to anything else is not smart.
Let's say the Chinese government is incompetent and killed 56 million people, shouldn't that give India a massive head start? Shouldn't India be far ahead by now?
