BEIJING (Reuters) - China on Thursday (Feb 11) responded to a Reuters report that the United States and India are discussing joint naval patrols in the disputed South China Sea, warning that interference from countries outside the region threatens peace and stability.

"No cooperation between any countries should be directed at a third party," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in an e-mailed statement to Reuters, in response to a request for comment on the report published on Wednesday.

"Countries from outside the area must stop pushing forward the militarisation of the South China Sea, cease endangering the sovereignty and national security of littoral countries in the name of 'freedom of navigation' and harming the peace and stability of the region."

The United States wants its regional allies and other Asian nations to adopt a more united stance against China over the South China Sea, where tension has spiked since China's construction of seven islands in the Spratly archipelago.

China lays claim to most of the South China Sea, while Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam have rival claims.

A US defence official told Reuters this week the United States and India had held talks about joint naval patrols that could include the South China Sea.

The Indian navy has never carried out joint patrols with another country and a navy spokesman told Reuters there was no change in the government's policy of only joining an international military effort under the U.N. flag.

Neither the United States nor India have claims to the area, but the United States says it is concerned about shipping lanes running through the South China Sea, which carry an estimated US$5 trillion of trade every year.

Mr Hong urged caution. "We hope that the relevant parties speak and act with caution, refrain from intervening in the South China Sea issue, and especially avoid being manipulated by certain countries and ultimately harming their own interests."

China illustrates its claim to almost the entire South China Sea with a "nine-dashed line" on maps, that loops far to the south, with sections far closer to the coasts of countries like the Philippines and Vietnam than to its shores.

China's more assertive claim has included dredging to build up islands and the construction of air fields and shipping facilities on some reefs. It recently launched flights to one artificial island.

The United States has responded by sending navy ships close to the islands China claims. China has condemned that as provocative.

India has a long-running land border dispute with China, and has stepped up its naval presence far beyond the Indian Ocean in recent years, deploying a ship to the South China Sea almost constantly, an Indian navy commander said.

The defence ministry has denied reports that India and US have held talks about conducting joint naval patrols, which in the future could even extend to the contentious South China Sea, where Beijing is locked in bitter territorial disputes with its neighbours.

"Such reports are highly speculative. Whatever concrete bilateral discussions took place between defence minister Manohar Parrikar and his American counter Ash Carter in the US are reflected in the joint statement issued on December 11," said a highly-placed MoD source on Wednesday.

Apart from expressing an intent to "maintain the strong momentum in bilateral security and defence engagement", and further expand maritime cooperation in the years ahead, the joint statement had welcomed Indian participation in the Rim-of-Pacific multilateral naval exercise and Red Flag multilateral air combat exercise in the US this year.

"Moreover, India's stated policy is that it does and will join any international military operation only under the blue flag of United Nations. Consequently, while we do coordinate with the ongoing multilateral policing of the Gulf of Aden, we conduct our own anti-piracy patrols there," said the source.

India, of course, continues to be wary of China's rapid military modernisation and its aggressive behaviour in the Asia-Pacific, but wants to be seen as "a neutral player" in the geopolitical jostling underway in the region between Washington and Beijing.

But it has obliquely criticised Beijing's strongarm tactics in the South China Sea, holding that disputes between China and countries like Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and others should be resolved in a peaceful manner in accordance with international laws.

India has also repeatedly stressed the need for all to respect the freedom of navigation in international waters, right of passage and overflight, unimpeded commerce, and access to resources in accordance with the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

These days there's too much noise about South China Sea?

How come China who is out of Indian ocean region can do subversive activities in srilanka and Maldives and also Bangladesh, what has China got to do with these countries, it wants to destabilize India by all means, example is these Chinese a$$ licking JNU students, so what's wrong to side with the Americans? For that we should get advanced tech in return.

So painful for Chinese .Infact they drew the first blood ,openly interefered in a fundamental dispute with India and another South Asian country .They interferd in our land and openly challenge our sovreignity .
When our diplomats moved in a peaceful way they mistook that it was our weakness .
They played a lots of game when we have a pacifist PM Singh in GoI .
They started this game and now we are replying sweetly .After partition our GoI always prefered a good relation with China .But they betrayed us .
Like I said earlier India is not only a nation that gave birth to noble persons like Gandhi or Buddha but also gave birth to powerful brutal kings like Ashoka ,Rajaraja Chola ,strong personalities like Bhagat Singh,Netaji Bose etc ,world renowned tacticians like Chanakya .

We will continue this aggressive growth and modernization .
And whatever the Chinese did against us in our neighbourhood will reply in same manner in SCS .

On topic :India and US is testing the waters .They can defuse these situation if they agree for a mutual agreement and friendly relation with us .Otherwise ball will continue its roll.

Every action has a consequence they started this and now we playing the game too

In short, Indian navy will attend such a practice if China agrees.
