if there is no theft then why do you need high walls and barbed wire. It only detracts from the visual appeal and serves no other purpose.

I wonder if these high walls and barbed wire fence is actually meant to keep people in rather than keep criminals out? The things that make me go hmmm...

Most apartments in the US have a metal outer door too. Or at least metal clad, for preventing easy break-ins. This is standard US practice nowadays.

I don't think all Chinese properties in all neighborhoods have barbed wire and high walls.

There is a Chinese proverb "防君子不妨小人". It means that the door lock can not really prevent theft, but it can increase the difficulty of theft and warn people not to become thieves.

The same goes for anti-theft nets. In China, it is not because of poor public security that anti-theft nets are installed, and because anti-theft nets make public security better.

No it isn’t at least near me. They are mostly glass. I have never seen a metal door on an apartment.

Even in downtown Boston they are mostly glass although some of the Brownstones built in the 1800’s have wood doors with windows.

Not in any of the apartments I’ve seen - I must admit I haven’t visited many apartments or condos. I don’t know anyone that lives in one. Besides, you can make a hole in the dry wall with your fist so a metal door is kinda pointless. Besides, I thought we already established the US has a crime problem, so its understandable that people want the added security of metal doors.

Like the door lock, the anti-theft net is only a facility. It exists to warn rather than prevent.

You may not understand Chinese philosophy. The Chinese believe that the door lock and other facilities are not to prevent theft, but to warn people not to be thieves.

Your argument is specious. The military isn’t just for war, in China its primary mission is security. Unlike the US, Internal security and employment are also big components of its raison d'existence.

China would be a nice place for retirement life. My parents would rather stay in China instead of US. But China is a hell for younger generation because of its sky-rocketed housing price and shrinking employment market. All my friends with STEM background are trying their best to stay in US in order to avoid the bloodbath and overly competitive environment in China.

Ok let me clarify. Eileen Gu has not given up her US citizenship. If China has suddenly made a special exception for her and given her special dual citizenship rights then that is fine with the US as we recognize dual nationalities.

She is not on any quarterly list of US citizens who have officially renounced their citizenship. So any talk of it is just talk. She is currently back in the US living her usual life.

I am talking about new construction houses and apts. which have metal doors.

Simple ones for simple houses,

And elaborate ones for houses in nice neighborhoods.

Glass door entrances like this are typical in new construction of multi-unit apartments in my area. Mailboxes usually between two sets of glass doors.

I don’t think people here are going to like single steel doors as you have shown as they like hotel style double doors (preferably automatic) with plenty of room to move furniture though and not bump into people.

As for single family houses my home was built in 2005 and has a wooden door with glass on the sides.

The neighbor across the street has a huge oval window in their front door with a frosted floral design and was built in 2010. Something similar to the pic above.

I don’t know of any steel doors…but I wasn’t tapping on them to see what they are made of.

Yeah multi unit apts. are usually high rises in the East coast. In the West Coast posh urban areas (West Hollywood for example) we have midrise type apts. with automated sliding door entrances. Like this. Very few highrise apts. outside downtown.

But if the multi-unit apts. are in dangerous downtown areas, you have a keycard lock and strong fences with barbed wire top. Along with a gateman/concierge.

The question to us in the US would be, how did we allow this to get to this state of affairs? What did we do wrong?

More importantly, what can we do - to not stupidly oppose the Chinese, but have synergies with their economy - so we can prevent OUR DOWNSLIDE farther ? California is already playing this role well, and will do so in the future, as the largest economy in the US.

Do us all a favor and post an actual credible image from a california apartment complex on a residential street instead of some shot of a high security fence on the border or outside a prison.

Everybody knows living in certain areas of cities like LA can be shit because unfortunately many of the “haves” have fled to the suburbs leaving a higher percentage of “have nots”.

Income half the state average. 72% renters. Only 52% finished high school. 27% under the poverty line. I don’t have to go there to know that’s going to be a terrible place to live. Putting metal doors on apartment buildings doesn’t surprise me one bit.
