Vietnam welcomes China’s plan to release water from its Jinghong dam on the Mekong River to help mitigate severe drought in some Vietnamese provinces, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Monday.
MOFA’s deputy spokesperson Pham Thu Hang told the media at a briefing that Vietnam had asked China to increase the outflow from the dam in Yunnan Province since some Mekong Delta provinces are suffering from drought and saltwater intrusion.
Chinese authorities announced they would quickly implement a plan to discharge water from March 15 to April 4, she said.
The protection and sustainable use of water resources in the Mekong River is the shared responsibility of countries along the river basin to harmonize the interests of the riparian nations and their peoples, Hang added.
Around 140,000 hectares of rice have been damaged in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam’s largest rice producer, due to severe drought, Vietnam News Agency reported.
More than 150,000 households with 600,000 people face a shortage of clean water, according to the report.
