China to install first telescope on moon - People's Daily Online August 24, 2010

The Chang'e-III, which will launch from the Xi Chang Satellite Launch Center, will deliver a lander to the moon along with seven sets of instruments, including the world's first lunar telescope, said Ouyang Ziyuan, chief scientist of China's Lunar Probe Project, during his lecture at the China Science and Technology Museum.

Wei Jianyan, who is a researcher in charge of manufacturing the astronomical telescope, said that the astronomical telescope was temporarily named "ultraviolet telescope," and it was regarded as China's first step toward the establishment of a moon observatory in the future.

The telescope is mainly used to observe changes of the stars and planets from the moon. Over a period of time it will obtain a regular pattern from observational records. It also helps to protect the earth and explore outer space.
