Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo pledged Tuesday to enhance mutual trust and cooperation with Germany.

"China and Germany are facing both severe challenges and opportunities for cooperation amid the current international situation," Wu told Jens Bohrnsen, president of the German Bundesrat, or federal council.

During their meeting at the Great Hall of the People, Wu hailed the sound political and trade ties between the two states in recent years.

Wu said the bilateral relationship has contributed to the recovery of the global economy and to world peace and stability.

Wu, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, proposed the two countries further cooperation.

He also vowed to enhance contact between the two nations' leadership.

"China hopes to strengthen bilateral trade, economic and cultural ties, to stimulate cooperation between our two nations and promote the relationship between the two parliaments," Wu said.

Wan Gang, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and also China's Minister of Science and Technology, met with Bohrnsen later Tuesday.

Bohrnsen is leading a 70-strong delegation on a week-long visit to China at the invitation of the CPPCC National Committee, China's top political advisory body.

Besides Beijing, Bohrnsen has visited north China's Tianjin City, China's economic and commercial hub, Shanghai, and the port city of Dalian in northeast China.
