China & Timor-Leste pledge closer military cooperation

Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie met here with Timor-Leste's Secretary of State for Defense, Julio Tomas Pinto, here on Tuesday.

Liang said China will make joint efforts with Timor-Leste to push forward bilateral military exchanges and cooperation.

In recent years, bilateral cooperation had been carried out in areas including politics, economy and trade, energy, public health and military, and the two armed forces also conducted friendly cooperation through personnel training and exchange visits, Liang said.

Pinto, who is on his first visit to China, hailed the two countries had enjoyed increasingly closer friendship in recent years.

Timor-Leste appreciated China's support and help for its development, Pinto said, adding he hoped his visit could give impetus to the development of bilateral relationship.

For 23 years East Timor was a province of Indonesia. They better have a good relationship with Indonesia too. Militarily, Indonesia is the strongest in that region compares to Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, and Brunei.

On the other hand it's good for the PLAN and PLAAF to counter the AUSSIE's influence in that region. China has pumped millions of dollars to that country. The East Timor's government buildings were constructed by the Chinese.
