China supports UN Security Council committees in counter-terrorism efforts

China voiced its support for three UN Security Council committees in their efforts to combat terrorism and hoped for more progress in this regard.

The Security Council held an open meeting on Monday to hear briefings delivered by heads of the 1267 committee, the Counter- Terrorism Committee (CTC) and the 1540 committee.

"Terrorism remains the public enemy to the international community. China is against terrorism in all forms and hopes the international community to continue to make joint efforts to prevent and crackdown terrorism," Yang Tao, counselor of the Chinese Mission to the United Nations told the meeting.

The Council will adopt in June a resolution renewing measures of sanctions on Al-Qaida and Taliban.

"China hopes the new resolution will help to improve the work of 1267 committee and safeguard the authority and effectiveness of the sanction regime," Yang said.

China praised the CTC's efforts in implementation of the Council 's resolutions on counter-terrorism.

China supported the CTC to adopt measures such as running regional workshop, improving national assessment report, facilitating technical assistance to continue the dialogue with member states and help them enhance counter-terrorism capacity building, Yang said.

Yang pointed out that Resolution 1977 adopted unanimously by the Security Council reflected the determination of the member states to push through the international process of anti-proliferation.

Resolution 1977, adopted in April, extended the mandate of the 1540 committee for 10 years.

"China hopes the 1540 committee to launch its work in a practical and prudent manner, assist member states in implementing all obligations under the resolution, and promote the process towards all goals under the resolution 1540 in a comprehensive, balanced and effective way," Yang said.

"China will continue to join the other member states in supporting and participating in the work of the committee and promoting further progress made in international anti- proliferation process," he added.

The CTC was established by Security Council Resolution 1373, which was adopted unanimously on Sept. 28,2001 in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.

It was tasked with helping member states enhance their legal and institutional ability to counter terrorist activities.

The 1267 committee was created in 1999 by Resolution 1267 with a mandate to monitor sanctions against Al-Qaida and the Taliban.

Established by Resolution 1540 in 2004, the 1540 committee was entrusted with helping member states prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Every country that is determined to obtain weapons of mass of destruction has obtained them. There're 5 nuclear weapon states and 4 illegals. Additionally, five more NATO weapon sharing states host nukes. There're already 14 countries in this world with WMD of which only 3 are dipolomatic rivals to the US. The world is already a dangerous place.
