PressTV - China-South Korea free trade deal worries Taiwan

Taiwanese government says it is alarmed by China’s free trade agreement with South Korea, urging the Taiwan opposition to stop boycotting a planned pact between Taipei and Beijing.

Taiwan government spokesman, Sun Lih-chyun, said the China-South Korea free trade deal struck on Monday is a “most worrying event” for Taiwan.

“With the agreement, South Korea will be able to sell its products cheaper in the Chinese mainland, thus lowering the competitive edge of Taiwan-made products there,” Sun said, adding that the deal pushes Seoul another step forward in terms of greater access to global markets. South Korea has already signed free trade deals with 50 other countries.

Taiwan’s overall exports are expected to fall by 1.34 percentage points or USD 3.75 billion when the trade agreement between China and South Korea takes effect, according to a study by Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Taiwan considers China as its largest trading partner, with trades amounting to USD 97.24 billion in the nine months to September.

Taiwan and China signed an Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement in 2010.

In March and April, protests erupted after a follow-up deal was announced to open up service sectors between the two countries. Protesters said the proposed trade pact threatens Taiwan’s autonomy.

In September, Taiwan reopened negotiations with China on the follow-up agreement.

Taiwan’s ruling Kuomintang party accuses the main opposition party, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), of delaying consideration of the abovementioned services trade pact.

However, DPP Secretary General Joseph Wu said the ruling party is overplaying the negative impact from the Beijing-Seoul trade deal, warning of over-reliance on the Chinese market.

The two pacts are expected to remain in parliament until next year.

China is the biggest trading partner for Taiwan. Ties between the two countries have improved over the past few years since Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou came to power in 2008.

Seems like the "sunflower" thugs are throwing their own countrymen under the bus. Patriotic people in Taiwanese should take to the streets and demand that the Taiwanese government make Taiwan's economy a priority, whatever the saboteurs may say.

Well then, the Taipei should implement a FTA agreement with Beijing, better yet, ones with other neighbors such as Tokyo and Seoul.

There is already one and the Services Agreement temporarily killed by the Sunflowerists was actually part of a larger SEF-ARATS scheme.

One of Samsung's executive had recently said that they had a plan to "kill Taiwan" in terms of its competition in mobile electronics and semiconductor segments; and they look like just doing it with smart policy toward China.

If I am the government, I will indict the Sunflower provocateurs with high treason because they literally set to kill Taiwan's last and only hope.

China won't be big-brotherly to them for too long and, just check out the trade figures, the intentional negative trade balance is being readjusted in China's favor. These are all controlled adjustments.

I was not aware of this development. And quite surprised that Samsung's executive could have the gall to "kill Taiwan", how provocative them. Aside from the SEF-ARATs, does Taiwan have any plans to develop FTAs or the like with other states in the region?

Taiwan has very little room to sign FTAs. China does not allow it. So far, to the best of my knowledge, they signed two FTAish agreements, one with Singapore, and this is after Singapore consulted to China and received OK from Beijing. As a rule, any country that sign an FTA-like agreement with Taiwan must have already signed an FTA with Beijing.

An FTA suggests political sovereignty and China does not recognize Taiwan as a separate entity.

I'm guessing this Joseph Wu has plenty of cash, maybe from bribes, because without the Mainland market, Taiwanese per capita income will take a drastic plunge.

to what end? Korea and Japan don't need their products, you guys have the same in most areas, and the ones that you don't is not worth a free trade agreement. Then there's the fact, that neither Korea nor you is willing to compromise on TPP, I don't think you guys are going to fold to Taiwan.

Lest we forget, Chinese market for these products, far out strip Japanese and Korean markets, which means if Japanese or Korean companies has a play in China, Taiwan would be playing handicapped, and seeing as how this isn't the handicapped olympics, you really don't get sympathy points for rolling to a 20 second time on a 10 meter race.

Thank you, I admit I am not up to date with Taiwanese security or economic relations, your input is greatly appreciated.

No! It's NOT!

China-Taiwan free trade that worried Taiwan.

If there any discussion about it, there will a lot of noise in the media.

As well as protesters on the street.

So why should Taiwan worry about China-Korea free trade?
