China snubs US defence secretary
The United States Defence Secretary has called off a planned visit to China, after Beijing said the timing was 'inconvenient'.
Robert Gates was scheduled to visit China next week, after an invitation from the country's second-ranking officer, General Xu Caihou, to boost military dialogue.
Mr Gates had tentatively planned to travel to China after attending an annual Asia security conference in Singapore this week.
He press secretary says he still hopes to visit China in the near future, citing the need for increased cooperation and stronger ties between the two country's military leaders,
China has previously postponed several high-level military exchanges over tensions relating to US arms sales to Taiwan.
