China should improve human rights record: Taiwan prez Ma

Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou on Sunday called upon Beijing to improve its human rights record, treat dissidents fairly and open up to greater popular participation in the political process.
Large scale weekend protests and plummeting approval ratings marked the lead-up to Ma's formal
beginning of his second term of Sunday; many among the protesters demanded his resignation for not generating more employment and trying to push through tariff hikes in petrol and electricity.

Delivering his inaugural second-term address, and later at an international press conference, Ma tried to calm frayed public nerves by repeatedly talking about improving communication with people and promising more transparency in governance.

On China, he said there should be more opportunities for dialogue between the two countries focusing on democracy, human rights and rule of law.

Commenting on the case of blind activist Chen Guangcheng, -- which he seemed to have followed keenly -- Ma said he had always taken up issues related to human rights with Beijing be it after the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989 or the recent cases - after he took over as President in 2008 - related noble winner Liu Xiaobo or artist Ai Weiwei.

Ma said he wasn't basing his ideas of human rights on western principals but on traditional Chinese cultural values like loving and caring for each other.

Steady improvement in human rights and the rule of law would contribute to further reducing the "the feeling of otherness between people on the two sides of the Taiwan Straits," Ma said at the inaugural address.

On cross-strait relations with China, Ma said his policies were guided by Taiwan's Constitution. At his address, the President reiterated the "1992 consensus". He said the consensus means that each side - People's Republic of China and Republic of China (Taiwan) - "acknowledges the existence of 'one China' but maintains its own interpretation of what that means."

"Our cross-strait policy must maintain the status quo of 'no unification, no independence and no use of force,'" Ma said, offering little hope to many in mainland China's ruling Communist Party of China who hopes for reunification.

He ruled out a peace agreement with China, saying it would require strong public support and a referendum mandate and he does not see any urgency in the matter.

The approach to relations with China was to work "on the economy first and politics later, and on the easier tasks first and the more difficult ones later."

.
Thanks. President Ma. Pls consider Mainlanders' Human rights, freedom and democracy when you negotiate with the Mainland leaders. Taiwan can include those topics in our talks to help mainland.

. . . .
China should follow the lead of Taiwan and become democratic. Alas, it is never going to happen.

yeah india is a very vivid example of bad democracy which China should by all means walk away from and follow its own path best fit for itself even it goes democratic eventually

.
Mainland and Taiwan both are part of China. Mainland human right have problem, Yes, we need improvement, I think the external pressure will promote china human right!!
Indian don't need these, They are democratic and have full freedom!! Someone can't realise their problem, or don't want to accept their problem!!

India puts a stain on the idea of 'democracy'```it is no better than least developed African countries..

a balanced society is all we want to achieve, only brainwashed and naive people will believe one word like 'democracy' will suddenly make a country a better place``

That is a view jaundiced by the teachings of a communist system, so your lack of knowledge is entirely pardonable.

If that is what they trumpet in Chinese media to make the Chinese citizens feel better about working for a handful of rice a day in some Foxconn factory and the people buy such communist nonsense - then whom does one blame - the communist regime or the simple minded citizens?

Human Rights have to be viewed within the context of a nation's Financial, Economic and Social growth pattern. China has made huge strides in the human rights area, compared with the Sixty's era.

.
A statement on Chinese Human rights and a news about buying American F-16's..

Sounds like, the recent affair that Chinese members here has been trumpeting about, is not going all that good..

Good job Taiwan!! Keep the good work going!!

Wow!! Now so you mean to say it is OK to crush your people under tanks or to shot in the head in the name of achieving so called growth pattern.. What a marvelous thought!!

I can understand your love for China but doing it blindly is way too dangerous than you would even imagine..

Yes, So, I don't like Mao, But I still admire he, and respect him, At least he did good at his early years, and Because he looked far ahead, So, we build the comprehensive industry system, and we have good military industry system!!
Yes, In tianmin square affair, many people died, it was rude, But Deng open a new stage of china, and let china be rich, Both they are great stategists!!
You indian always show off your democracy, Don't do it, we like it, but not india-style democracy. 60 years gone, in the process, many chinese died from politics, and starvation before 1980, and in 1989. India may be not many people died from politics, But much more people died from starvation and chaos, even now, You can't resolve the mess. at least, we go faster than you!
I can't represent for china, I don't like CCP, but I still support them, Because their long-term strategy is much better than many countries, they are corrupt, yes, But the question is the constitution problem, One-party will bring about corruption, but One-party always can efficiently resolve the problem too!! If you want to know china well, Don't just read the western and indian paper, which be filled with too much prejudice, I always neutralize the news from TV and that from internet. Many indian know little about China!!
You know, what's the problem in india? Not that the official are corrupt and just talk, no action, but that the bigger problem is that, Even you normal indian, just know talking, so except condemning you government and change another corrupt, you can't do anything, you don't think about the problem why you are far behind china after 30 years, and just make the excuse for you failure!! Yes, you can mock china just know working while you are enjoy freedom of speech, nevermind!!
And, the democracy and freedom of speech is that you inherited from English, not you made, so I can't you don't really understand them, so the mess go on which stem from that mature democray but immature indian!!

Stick to topic Chini!! It is about Taiwan & about human rights in China...

In all, nothing to do with India..
I find that, you indian like make such comment to remind chinese on the topic, it is not wrong itself, But you neglect many times you indian like doing such things!
And If you don't pull the related countred something to here, the argue is hard to keep on!!!!!
whatever it is good or bad, India democracy is the most special in the world, anyone can learn from you, whatever bad or good!
And it is not off topic, the point is that China should improve human right, You are democratic, If let india involve in the argue, we can learn much, and then improve our human right better, then you can boast that you have contribution to the improvment of china human right, Is it not good? In here, you indian always concern on china human right, and always make the comments of "free Tibet" " free chinese", now, you can!!
