Embarrassment as Chinese frigate runs aground
Date
July 13, 2012 - 3:22PM

A Chinese warship has run aground while patrolling contested waters adjacent to the Philippines in the South China Sea.
The frigate pinned itself to a reef last night at Half Moon Shoal, on the south-eastern edge of the Spratly Islands, and remains "thoroughly stuck", according to Western diplomatic sources shortly after midday local time, or 2pm AEST.
Salvage operations could be diplomatically challenging, given the vessel appears to have run aground within 200 kilometres of the Philippines coast, which is squarely within what Manila claims to be its Exclusive Economic Zone.
The stricken People's Liberation Army Navy vessel, believed to be No. 560, a Jianghu-class frigate, has in the past been involved in aggressively discouraging Filipino fishing boats from the area.

Maybe the Philippine navy could give a hand to this trespassing Chinese ship??? Or confiscate it??? Another proof of Chinese vessel intruding in our territory.

UPDATED) MANILA, Philippines — A Chinese warship is “thoroughly stuck” in a reef within Philippine territory, an Australian news website reported Friday, July 13.

The Philippines is ready to assist the warship if, indeed, it was stuck, said Western Command Lt Col Neil Estrella. He said the Western Command, however, is still verifying this information. (Read: PH ready to assist Chinese warship.)

Citing Western diplomatic sources, the Sydney Morning Herald said the warship on Thursday, July 12, “pinned itself” to a reef in Half Moon Shoal.

"Salvage operations could be diplomatically challenging, given the vessel appears to have run aground within 200 kilometers of the Philippine coast, which is squarely within what Manila claims to be its exclusive economic zone," the news article said.

The vessel is believed to be People's Liberation Army Navy vessel No. 560, a Jianghu-class frigate. It "has in the past been involved in aggressively discouraging Filipino fishing boats from the area," said the Australian report.

"The accident could not have come at a more embarrassing moment for the Chinese leadership, who have been pressing territorial claims and flexing the country's muscle ahead of a leadership transition later this year," the report added. — Rappler.com

BEIJING (AP) — China's Defense Ministry says one of its navy's missile frigates has run aground while conducting patrols in a disputed part of the South China Sea near the Philippines.

A brief statement posted to the ministry's website Friday said no injuries were reported and a recovery operation was being mounted. It said the accident occurred around 7 p.m. Wednesday as the ship was patrolling near Half Moon Shoal.

The area is about 60 nautical miles (111 kilometers) west of the Philippine province of Palawan in an area claimed by Manila.

Tensions in the area have been heightened following a standoff between Philippines and Chinese government boats at another shoal nearby. China claims almost all of the South China Sea and its island groups as its territory.

I wonder what the OP trying to convey here. Obviously it was a small mishap where no one got hurt. Is there a need to open a thread and tell the world every time a soldier misfire a weapon?
