China rolls out its first sky train
BEIJING: China's first sky train came off the assembly line in the city of Nanjing, making it third country after Germany and Japan to develop the technology.

The Nanjing Puzhen Company Limited, affiliated to China's largest state-owned rolling stock manufacturer CRRC Corporation Limited (China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation) rolled out the elevated railway train on Saturday, according to official media.

The two compartments can hold more than 200 passengers, and when compared with subways and trams, sky trains have lower costs, better climbing and turning ability, and higher wind resistance, Chinese officials said.

Professor Yue Zhaohong at the Beijing Jiaotong University said the construction period of sky trains is also much shorter than that of subways, lasting only three to five months for dozens of kms of rails, China Radio International reported.

The overhauled railway is driven by batteries which can run for four hours at a time, and the batteries can be changed when stopped at a station, with the whole process lasting only two minutes.

Experts said sky trains are a good choice in third and fourth tiered cities and at scenic spots.

The sky trains will make their debut in China next year at a variety of scenic places, it said.

According to state media, they are cheaper and less time-consuming to build and are more environmentally-friendly to boot. One Beijing Jiaotong University professor estimates that it will only take 3 to 5 months to install dozens of kilometers of rail.

You claim its 'cheaper', but cheaper than what ? Bus ? rikshaw ? Monorail ? metro ?

It runs on battery which as to be charged every 3-4 hours. What is the charging time ? What is the battery life ? Batteries will have to be replaced every year or two. What happens to the disposed battery ? Its an environmental toxic waste. What is the cost of the new batteries ?

Monorail can carry upto 570 passengers. This Sky train can carry only 200 passengers.

The monorail does not have any downtime due to 'charging'. Sky train will be inactive while it 'charges' it batteries.

What is the speed of this Sky train ? Mono rail can go upto 50 mph or 80 km/hr.

Mono Rail can go upto a gradient of 10 to 12%. What kind of gradient can this sky train handle ? Considering its unstable traction, I suspect its gradient will be around 5-6%.

For all practical matters, it seems to be inferior to the Mono Rail.
