China poses bigger threat than Pakistan: Arun Shourie

BJP leader and former Union Minister Arun Shourie on Friday warned that China was a bigger threat to India than Pakistan.
Elaborating on the adversities India faced in the western front, he said, "What we need is a new thinking and a new hope."
He said issues with Pakistan are manageable, but China is a bigger problem because it is using Pakistan as a weapon against India. In China, there was a perception that India did not mind losing territory. If a claim is made long enough, India would get used to it.
Claim and grab is their policy. If we are not careful, Aksai Chin would be repeated, he said. He said there was already a reaction against China in Asia owing to its aggressive posture on territorial claims.
Noted journalist Arun Shourie accused UPA government of not handling border issues effectively and stressed on the need to get serious in dealing with China.
Referring to the "failed" attempt to construct two roads in the Daulat Beg Oldi area, he said, "Is this the way to fight China?"
Arun Shourie underscored the importance of India forming alliances with other countries in view of the prevailing opportunity in Asia.
But he said India had to take advantage of the fact that the Taliban of Afghanistan too had its issues with Pakistan. Pakistan is more manageable than China, which was certainly the biggest threat. He said China had a clear view of its own and had benchmarked itself with the US.
Speaking at a function, organised by Nani Palkhivala Foundation here, Shourie alleged that the government did not handle the border issue with China with seriousness.
Drawing comparisons between the two countries, the former Disinvestment Minister said that Indian per capita income was higher than China in 1980, but now Chinese per capita income is four times higher than India's.
"Deception is part of Chinese statecraft," he said, adding, India needed to buck up. "There is no reason to feel defeatist.. We just need to buck up."
Later at the function, his book 'Self deception: India and China relations' was released by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
