China Pledges More Support to Sri Lanka

Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao yesterday pledged to continue all development assistance to Sri Lanka as it is already doing at present. He said this during bilateral talks with President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is on a three day official visit to China.

The two leaders discussed the progress of development projects currently being carried out with the assistance of the Chinese Government.

China has already funded the development of Sri Lanka’s ports and the power sector. They also discussed the opportunities that are being opened to reach development goals with the dawn of peace in Sri Lanka.

The Chinese Premier also promised his country’s assistance to develop infrastructure, particularly the highway network and bridges.

The discussions that were held in a cordial atmosphere also centred on the strengthening of friendship and bilateral ties between the two countries. Talks were also focused on the Hambantota port development project, the largest project in Sri Lanka carried out with Chinese funding.
