What's new

China, Pakistan, India, BDesh, and Turkey: How fat are their wallets?

China--------------------------------------------------------$3,600 billions and climbing

How did Turkey,India, S Korea, or China accumulate so much wealth?

Too much foreign exchange reserve is not a good thing for China. US is outputing inflation to the whole world through QE.

As US 3rd quarter GDP grows strongly at roughly 4.1%, it will reduce QE from 40 billion to 35 billion, it's not a good thing for new emerging market.

.
Very interesting thread, but we should find where the Foreign exchange reserves come from?
EG for China, Foreign exchange reserves is 3.31trillion $ at the end of 2012, and 3.66trillion $ at the Sep 2013.
I checked the Trade surplus, whole Trade surplus of China from 1990 to 2012 is 1.9trillion,
FDI from 1990 to 2012 is 1.4trillion $,
Trade surplus+FDI + a little others-out FDI=Foreign exchange reserves

From 1980 to 1989, except 2 years, nerely all years China had Trade deficit, at total 44.3billion $, from 1950 to 1981 in which 11 years China only had less than 0.1billion $ foreign exchange reserves.

I wish we Indians followed China's model. We skipped the industrialisation phase and went straight to services. It has kept millions of farmers from moving on to factory jobs which China did successfully. Industrial services >> Software services and we could have made way much more $$$$ that way. I do not know what model Pakistan is following though.

Pakistanis liberals didn't go anywhere. They are right here amongst us.

Before I explain their role.

I have a question for you.

What's common between Pakistani Liberals and Pakistani Islamists?

I would like to believe nothing .. and I'll tell you why ..

That the fact they are pakistanis first and foremost wouldn't make an iota of difference when you are talking about islamists is because they are motivated and radicalized by a certain sect of socio-political/religious leaders whose single point agenda is to maintain and enhance their powerbases. Historically the easiest way to do so was to promote fear and anarchy and then appear to be a messiah and savior to the masses. Case to the point .. Hitler and Stalin or Ashok Singhal's Babri Masjid rants or Mr. Lal Topi's Ghazwa-e-hinds notions in the subcontinent.

Liberals whether they be pakistanis or indians or nigerians for that matter tend to be educated (and I mean open minded enough to permit themselves to think and conceptualize ideas and notions as an individual which might not necessarily reflect the horde, not a college degree). A liberal pakistani will (i imagine to the best of my belief) think beyond the tenets of religion and try and take the best possible path for country and society at large and not just a particular sect, caste or religion.

On a different note though a counter argument I have faced on occasions is that you cannot be Liberal pakistani and a true patriot at the same time as Pakistan is inherently an orthodox Islamic state.

.
I do not know what model Pakistan is following though.

Pretty much this:

India, China and Pakistan are providing services based on their long histories and very specific expertise that noone else in the world can offer.

So it is good to admire each other, but it is not necessary that you do exactly the same thing as the other.

In summary please allow me to use this example (even though in real life we all offer multiple type of services).

-- If China is known for heart surgery
-- If India is known for brain surgery
-- If Pakistan is known as a surgeon who fixes broken bones.

Then it is OK to admire each other and even ask for help in the specific area of expertise

But you can never start saying

-- I hate being brain surgeon. I wish I had been a heart surgeon.

Also we cannot sit around and say hahahahahah, orthopedic surgeons are dumb idiots, we are superior because we deal with brains.

After giving this simpler example

Let me point out

that long time ago like 350 years ago British East India Company (BEIC) showed up in our part of the world. Guess what kind of experts they hired?

1. BEIC got the best industrial workers from China
2. BEIC got the best office workers from central (north and south) and East India
3. BEIC got the best police and military "workers" from modern day Pakistan

Fast forward to 1990s, the same specializations are being offered to the West like so many centuries ago.

Hope you understand.

@FaujHistorian

Did you take into account our 'warfare history'?

1971 - Economy crashed
1979 - 1989 - We were fighting commies for our Afghan 'brothers' and 'American masters'.

1990-1996 - Followed by the world's largest human migration of refugees, we were engaged in a civil war in Afghanistan against India and its N.Alliance proxies.

Plus we were under samctions.

1998: Indian brothers pop their nuclear bomb 2nd time just 40 miles away from our border...we pop back..... = more sanctions.

1999 : Kargil flare up + Sanctions + a posdible financial meltdown.

2000-2002 : We were in a 'full scale stand off with India'. + Sanctions.

2001: Holy land of Afghanistan gets invaded again. Uncle sam needs our help, sanctions are lifted in return for fighting yet another war on their behalf.

2005 : One of the worst earthquakes in human history, economic progress plummets.

2007: Hazrat Zardari gains power.

2010 : One of the worst flooding in recorded history, followed by a historic IDP crisis ON TOP of an existing IDP crisis from SWAT opetation, which alone was the largest IDP crisis in the world after WW-II. !

2014 : - We are reaching the end of all of the above in 'one piece'. The war costing us ~ 60,000 deaths and an economic loss of over $70-100 Billion!

Now please tell me all of the other nations had been subjected to what we have been subjected to, would they STILL have the same fat wallet as they have today??

The answer is 'no'. Peace brings economic prosparity and peace is a luxury we haven't had for ~ 35 years because we are too busy 'fighting other people's wars'.

This is madness, this is time we QUIT this and fight for OURSELVES and OURSELVES ALONE!!!

Good observations

but few differences as well (they got to be. Don't you even realize our bad blood on PDF running now for several decades? hahahaha).

See my post #21.

I hope you see that OUR business has been WAR for at least 300 years if not more.

This is how we make money. We are profiteers of WAR. We are dastardly group. Who only know to earn money by aiding and abetting wars in the region.

So sorry.

you have to learn to live with it.

We are bunch of bad men. very very bad men. hahaha.

peace (strangely from the war profiteer).

@FaujHistorian

This is time we give up this 'mercenery ethic' of fighting wars on other people's behalf.

Allah has blessed us with immense human potential, intellectual capital, natural resources and a credible defense.

Trust me man, there are not many nations in the world that can claim that. ONLY if we manage our country better, we can have a 'fat wallet' like these states in the mid term!

Everyone has the same religion when it comes to money. Extremism will vanish in an economically powerful Pakistan.

A-Bomb l Check
H-Bomb l Check
Thermobaric Bomb l Check
E-Bomb-???

That E is as in Economics....the final weapon we need up our sleeves to rise as one of the great nations.

Pakistan has been an entity for 66 years, how did you come up with the 300 figure? Are you going back to the 1700's last i remember Pakistan came into Existence in 1947 not 1700...

This is how we make money. We are profiteers of WAR.
Sir, show me 1 nation that has not participated in war and I will gladly eat my own hat!

HERE IS A LIST OF WARS in HISTORY:

PAKISTAN ONLY FOUGHT 4...

This is how we make money.
Funny, i thought most Pakistanis were agriculturalists... It is the mainstay of our economy is it not?

We are dastardly group
So now the people are judged by the actions of the state?

We are bunch of bad men. very very bad men. hahaha.
What happened to the women... I thought you were a champion for equality, sure this is discrimination if only men are condemned and not the women.

I would however like to point out that the said model worked because of specific social structures that imposed on the masses. It would never work in the Indian context. A gentleman who went by the name of Mr. Sanjay Gandhi did try and emulate some of the policies China was enforcing during its heydays ......... and look where that landed him. :hang2:

Bhai Rescue

That was a light hearted take on the 300 years history.

borders changed but people in the modern day Pakistan are the sons of soil.

They have been here for a lot more than 300 years.

Thus their habits and their culture and their history must not be shrunk to 60 years.

That will be a HUGE travesty with the history of people.

So yes majority of modern day Punjab were agriculturist, but who was not? especially if you go back 200 years. Everyone had to do some agriculture to survive. Taht's not the only thing people did though.

In case of modern day Pakistan, majority of people from up north supplemented their farm income with jobs in law enforcement.

Do you know by the way, the origin of a South Indian Sultan aka Tipu?

Peace

Can you expect shark to quit attacking other fish

and become vegetarian?

I'm surprised that you would use derogatory terms like "mercenary ethic".

A job is a job.

Do you see a computer programmer for Andhra using those kind of terms like Kompooter Kooli?

Do you.

Have pride in your profession, whatever it is.

have a pride please. And let others have pride in their chosen profession.

Not sure about your ethnic background and I'll never comment on it (against my principles)

But

In my family I see a lot of Bihar based anti-Punjabi rhetoric.

But that's just stupid.

We all have our strengths and our weakness.

Us Biharis were not known to produce professional soldiers. At least not in large quantities as Punjab.

That doesn't give us any right to call them "mercenary" thing.

They work for their government of the time like we all do.

Thank you.

India is bigger than pakistan so of course it will have more foreign reserves than pakistan......

Not just Punjab, my family are not Punjabi, but even in our community people grew pulses back in the dark ages... And your right about "agriculture" not being the be all and end all of trades, some were traders, some were transporters, there are many other professions such as blacksmiths, hakeems, goldsmiths, fishmongers, career bureaucrats, land lords(if you can call that a profession), laborers, artisans, millers and carpenters. I don't know of any family that solely survived on "jang" as a profession...

.
Excellent point.

There were some old families you mentioned. Please do not forget trader/thinker/visionary family of Cowasjis.

Then there were new ones like the latif family of BECO fame
Sehgals
and

off course Sharifs (dad of the current PM, and CM-Punjab).

They all pushed Pakistani economy way beyond one could have ever imagined in the challenging days of 1947.

However 70s changed all that when marxist, socialists looted all those factories, banks, and even colleges and schools.
While the commie Bhutto destroyed the economic engine,

he also started consuming Wahabi poison from the likes of Shah faisal.

Islamo fascism started as an outcrop of Islamo-socialism.

It was like turning Pakistan's industrial heartland into a rust belt within a short span of 2 years.

All these business families were crushed under the full weight of state.

Once economy and economic engine was gone.

Pakistanis dug themselves even deeper by continuing with Islamo-socialism all the way until mid 90s.

peace
u r right friend, communists are scums
