China, Pak major irritants to India's security: Army chief

China and Pakistan remain two major irritants to India's national security, Indian Army chief General V.K. Singh said in the national capital on Friday.

In a clear indication that India is worried, Gen Singh said although the border with China was stable at present, the armed forces could not take any chances. He said there might be uncertainty about a conventional war with China but skirmishes were certainly possible.

The army chief stressed on the need for substantial conventional war fighting capabilities to defend the country.

Interestingly, the army chief's comments come even as Defence Minister A.K. Antony is in Vietnam attending the ASEAN defence ministers' meeting which is also being attended by China.

"We have a risen China, both economically and militarily. Although we have CBMs on place, although we have a very stable border, yet we have a border dispute," said Gen Singh.

"All out conventional war may be highly uncertain, nevertheless skirmishes can occur. We should have a great amount of conventional capability to function in a conventional conflagration and yet be prepared to function in a nuclear backdrop," he added.

Yeah. And I had two fried eggs for breakfast today, nawabi style, with chopped tomatoes and onions.

Inane, unremarkable and un-newsworthy. Slow news day?

I doubt these (the heading) are the precise words used by the Army Chief. Seems to be coming out of reporters mind.

Even Indian chai wala knows this nothing special in v k singh speech. :D

Just check the other source I provided.

We have two major irritants. One, there is a problem of governance in Pakistan where terror outfits receive support and where internal situation is not very good. And, therefore, it can have a fallout in terms of how these things impact India.

"Till the time the terrorist infrastructure remains intact on the other side, we have something to worry," he said inaugurating a seminar on 'Indian Army: Emerging Roles and Tasks' here.

See the difference between two statements. One given by the Army Chief and the one given by reporter.

Effictively he's saying "Govt. of Pakistan's current situation is an irritant for our national security."

How is it different that "Pakistan's current situation is an irritant for our national security."?

He is the chief of one of the world's largest and most powerful armies. I hope you do understand that if he has reached the position where he is, he cannot be just another random and misinformed common indian. He would know many things you and I do not.

It's not a rant. It's his assessment and I doubt if anyone can dispute the fact that Pakistan's situation today is really very difficult after the floods. Your economy is virtually hanging from a thread.

BTW he did not comment on Pakistan's situation per se, he commented on the impact it could have on India.

he was talking on India's national security..where the hell did he comment on "how your Govt. was running" ??

I wonder even such high ranked Indian official lives on rants

this high ranked official is India's army chief who has all the rights to speak on india's security concerns, not that he is some high ranked member on pdf who would go around trolling.
