CHINA now has more people getting online than any other country. As of June this year, 253m Chinese were using the internet according to the latest report by the China Internet Network Information Centre, a government organisation. America must make do with second place, with around 223m users according to Nielsen, an internet-ratings company. The growth in China's internet users has been rapid—91m people have come online in the past year alone. And with a population of some 1.3 billion, there will be plenty more to come.

Awesome, I wonder if they would demand authority over ICANN now?

There was a drive to move ICANN under UN control but the US refused saying that 90% of the Internet is in America.

The users have already gone up, soon, servers, infrastructure would go up too.

China has also the greatest censorship!

It is like being an eunuch!

Have life, but not action!

But that depends, the US blocks sites as well.

Even a giant like google was asked to remove US bases from Google maps or reposition them.

A lot of Islamic websites have gotten the boot as well. On the flipside those run by terrorists against Pakistan are up.

Censorship is a part of life. But then give all governments an equal say in it or don't do it at all. OR do it for your own citizens only.

Would you like your military installations to be public?

Would you compare it with news of your society?

As different as chalk and cheese!

If Islamic sites are banned, then it is stupid; unless it teaches how to make bombs!!

A very good question.

Yes. China has established its own root: CNNIC(中国互联网络信息中心). Currently it only registers and maps domain name within China. In 2009, it will merge to the world. After that, a website in China may have two names, one in Chinese and the other in other language. Öйú»¥ÁªÍøÂçÐÅÏ¢ÖÐÐÄÆô¶¯"ÖйúÓòÃûÈ«ÇòÉý¼¶Ðж¯"--¿Æ¼¼--ÈËÃñÍø

Current ICANN is physically on US soil, and is in effect controlled by US governemnt. ICANN - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I remember an article couple of years back. CNNIC aims at resolving several issues like: 1) naming in Chinese characters. Currently ICANN rooted in US does not support Chinese language. 2) National security. In time of conflict, Chinese websites will be in US control, since they administrate the assignments. By switching to Chinese root(s), business can be kept as usual. Maybe 3) Challenge existing monopoly of internet technologies even for peace time competition given the fact that business in China is weighing more and more.

It is a big deal!
