I doubt the Malay afraid of losing power, because they already control almost everything in the country.
Afraid losing power is the excuse for public, i do believe the real reason is UMNO internal power struggle. There are at least two teams are fighting for power.
Just like other political parties around the world; example is CPC. There also few teams inside the party fighting for power, we as outsider know almost nothing.

They are afraid Malay lose control of this country. Unlike the Chinese, Malays are very dependent on government contracts, handouts, government jobs and education quota. They fear Malays would become Red Indians of the United States or the Malays of Singapore. Apparently many inside UMNO againts Najib, fears for their position. Patronage is still the fundamental criteria for advancement within UMNO.
