China Led Consortium Lifted South Korean Ferry That Sank 3 years Ago.

What surprised me is why South Korea would even need a Chinese company to help them to salvage the ferry, the one that touches every Korean's nerve?

Just imagine what Chinese would have reacted if China had to hire South Korean/Japanese company to salvage a Chinese ship that sank 3 years ago.

Good question:

It surprised me that South Korea is not capable of this type of ocean salvage operation, considering SK is one of the top power houses of ship building. I thought it was only about the cost.

Well, I don't think SK have heavy lift ship that can take the whole ship's weight once the wreck was surfaced. I don't think SK currently have such ship (Such as MV Blue Marlin) they could have possibly break the ship apart and salvage it that way, but they want the ship to raise intact so they can perform forensic on that ship, that mean they have to transfer it somehow from the ocean to land/Dry dock in one piece.

We will this recover vessel for Titanic? :p:

The Titanic has been sunk over 100 years, I cannot be salvage by any country as per UNESCO Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage. Plus Titanic is too big and too far for Chinese recovery ship to salvage. Estimated Chinese Lift Capacity is about 14000GRT, Titanic itself is 46328GRT, with all the water taken in, marine life build up and rust, it would weight more than 70,000GRT, which is about 5 times the Chinese Capacity.

I posted the following back in May last year. Media reported that salvaging the Sewol required minimum lifting capability of 10,000 ton. "Zhenhua 30" is capable of lifting 12,000 and set a world record of 13,200 during test.
China create the world's largest crane vessel: weighing 140,000 tons.

May 13, Zhenhua Heavy Industry independently-constructed the world's largest crane ship delivered in Shanghai Changxing base, and named "Zhenhua 30" on the spot.

Shanghai Salvage Co is from our city, so is Zhenhua Heavy Industry (ZPMC). Good to see Shanghai contribution to this mission.

South Korean Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Kim Young-suk on Wednesday sent a letter of appreciation to China’s Ministry of Transport, after the two countries worked together on the successful salvage operation of the Sewol ferry, Yonhap has reported.

Kim expressed his congratulations on the successful salvage operation of the Sewol, and voiced his appreciation for the 20 months of hard work by the Shanghai Salvage Company, working under China’s Ministry of Transport.

South Korea hopes to deepen its cooperation and communication with China’s Ministry of Transport on the fields of sea transportation and logistics, in order to improve people-to-people relations between the two countries.

The Shanghai Salvage Company established an operation base at the area where the Sewol sank, and dispatched a 10,000-ton barge and 100 divers.

The second stage of the salvage operation was completed on April 11, 1,091 days after the deadly maritime tragedy occurred on April 16, 2014 that killed 304 people.
