China launches electronic passports

China has launched its first ever electronic passports that would contain information in microchips. The adoption of electronic passports complies with international trends and plays an important role in international travel for officials, Huang Ping, director-general of the department of consular affairs of China's foreign ministry, said at the launch ceremony in Shanghai on Friday.

The passport features an electronic data storage chip that contains personal data including name, family name, personal numeric code, the document's term of validity, the issuing agency and citizenship, China Daily reported.

The electronic passport looks the same as a non-electronic one, but it has new digital encryption and printing technologies and is designed to foil forgers, the ministry said.

This will solve the long que problem for millions of PRC nationals going to and back from Hong Kong, electronic passport can cut big chump of waiting time.

Normally it's electronic feature can only be used in the original country of passport holder because the electronic gate must have access to the database on one's citizenship and id and finger prints etc, which usually are not share with other countries.

I have been using electronic passport for last 10 years, it is really convinient.

This is much much necessary for Pakistan under circumstances which we have these days.

and so with india.....we face da same ghost........maaaaan......we are so similar and interdependednt.......we cant live without each other...hai na...

I have a NZ electronic passport and it is quite convenient to use the machines and cut to the right lines.

Have the international airports installed facilities supporting such passports?

The E-passport uses a microchip embedded inside the strengthened back cover of a normal passport, so countries without the necessary facilities can just examine the passport the normal way with custom officers.

Pakistan already introduced this under mushraff era..an electronic passport simple has RFID chips to store important data and unique id which is used to bring up traveler profile on immigration computer once the passport is placed on official desk.

oh well very glad to hear that

Chip-in passports are very successful in UK
They store all the data about you and it is very easy to travel if you have electronic passports

On some of the airports I just have to scan my passport and enter :D - it saves a lot of my time awaiting long cue at the immigration counters... good thing is that it saves all the information about you and very convenient for both passengers and the immigration officers

It seems that illegal immigrants would need to learn some hacking skills.

apparently the chips are easy to hack, some guy in the us showed off a device that can copy all the info on the chip just by standing next to you

Basically the reverse engineered version of a custom scanner. If the airport scanner can scan your passport info, no reason why another person can't.

Making the chip may not be so easy, but sometimes people just want your personal information - they can use it to obtain another (non-electronic) passport.

Which is why this idea is a bad idea.
