China-Pakistan bilateral economic and trade relations have flourished since they have signed the bilateral free trade agreement in 2006. Recently, China has become the largest marble importer of Pakistan, with over 100,000 tons of annual imports. The General Manager of Xiamen Stone Trading Company, Fang Zihua has underlined that it is convenient for China to import tariff-free marble from Pakistan. Chinese clients are quite happy and satisfied with Pakistani marble. They have expressed willingness to import more products from Pakistan.

BEIJING, June 23 (APP):China has become the largest marble importer of Pakistan, with annual imports reaching over 100,000 tons, said Fang Zihua, the General Manager of Xiamen Stone Trading Company.

“It is the very first time for our company to trade with Pakistani marble traders,” Fang Zihua, said and added that Chinese clients were more than satisfied with the stone texture and that they were willing to import more products from Pakistan, China Economic Net reported on Tuesday.

According to Fang Zihua, the batch of about 150 ton of Pakistani marble was shipped through six standard containers.
“They had reached Nanan, Fujian Province late last year, but they didn’t get displayed until this June because of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Fang noted.”

“The color of this marble board is very beautiful, and its texture is unique. It looks like reddish waves being motivated”. Fang was so delighted to see the pattern that he named the marble `Red Valley’.

He further mentioned that the texture and colour of marble are full of changes, and a reddish one is rare. With the rapid development of the construction industry, China’s demand for marble and other construction stones is increasing year by year. China had been contributing significantly to Pakistan’s exports ever since the China–Pakistan Free Trade Agreement was signed. At present, China has become the largest marble importer of Pakistan, with annual imports reaching over 100,000 tons.

“There is no tariff on marble imported from Pakistan. It’s quite convenient,” Fang said, adding that he would visit Pakistan for in-depth cooperation with traders after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Italy is the largest marble exporter in the world if I remember right. I saw marbles everywhere on Europe building when I travel there, I just love it.

yes but unfortunately our marble industry is exporting it in raw form [link] ... not after value addition or processing which can increase the export in terms of $ for the same volume of marbel ....

secondly our extraction method are very old ... which increase the wastage % during the extraction.

If Chinese Inutries could invest in mining and processing of marble Industry this would not only give them return in relatively quick then in other sector but would connect a sizeable population of Balochistan and Sindh and KPK as large work force of this sector come from KPK at least in the processing industry working in Karachi, this way investment in one Industry would connect financial interest of people of 3 provinces with China and would act as counter to Indian and US supported anti-China elements.

Italy is the largest marble exporter in the world if I remember right. I saw marbles everywhere on Europe building when I travel there, I just love it.
we are the sixth largest extractor of one of the best quality marbles in the world with one of the largest reserve of Marbel, Onyx and Granite but due to financial issues and primitive technology we lack far behind the world in this industry [link 1, 2]

. .
Sad thing go to any market and shopkeeper after shopkeeper would try to sell you expensive Italian marble proudly claiming that it is imported. In Pakistan imported is automatically assumed to be better.

Meanwhile Pakistan's own marble is as good as if not better than Italian.
this stupid word i heard in pakistan only . when i was working in gulf countries i have never heard of it even 90% of things there were imported from other countries .

.
Instead of raw marble, perhaps Pakistan can focus on refined marble products, like tiles. Sell the finished product.

.
Pakistan can gather all the resoruces make a list and then add unfortunately with every reasources.

Difficult to adopt with current political system of Pakistan ....

As of now all of successive governments in Pakistan have focused on infrastructure and large scale industries in the projects related to CPEC, this is the mistake which planner and managers of our economy are doing, these Industries would take years to build and then reap the result while there are some existing sectors with high potential in which market access and and integration with Chinese Industries would not only give positive result in short period of time [let say within 5 years] but would be beneficial for both countries in Economic, Social and Political domains.

I was going to say, "why not set-up a SOE that specializes in domestic marble, and tries running the importers out of business -- save ForEx and (via exports) make ForEx." But then I remembered, instead of buying those SOEs and continuing the solid business model, our importers will push a corrupt party into power with the sole aim of staffing said SOEs with thieves, party loyalists, etc, and then drive the SOE into the ground, and then say BS like, "Pakistani marble doesn't work."

China model was export driven in 2000s. Now China economy growth is not export driven anymore.
But I think Pakistan should focus on export and fix trade deficit. With so many manpower, labor intensive industries should be priority, and it will create job and lower unemployment rate.
Pardon me, I think current PM is under huge western influence. He may know where is the problem, but lack the authority to fix it. Also he lived abroad for many years, he is too idealistic. The difference between London and Islamabad are huge, his western experience may not suitable in Pakistan.

I know but on the contrary Pakistan economy is driven by domestic consumption but other then Petroleum, Oil and Lubricants there is no good which we import for domestic consumption which we may not be able to provide the substitute from domestic sources only IF we work in right direction, therefore currently we need to work on 2 thing
- Import Substitutes
- Value addition of existing Industrial and non-Industrial products

Below I am attaching the table of Import and Export of Pakistan from Official SBP data item wise and in group for all to understand what I am trying to say

Pak Import Exprot from July-2009 till April-2020.jpg

To make it easy for many people to understand I in concise manner would say that for Import substitutes we need to work on Agriculture[including Agriculture Based Industry and Agriculture Support Industry], Engineering sector and Chemical Sector form the table attached we can easily note that this sectors could have saved us at least $ 266,578,356.00 in import bill and we would have been Trade surplus country only If we had worked on these sectors in past

The main thing here to note is that the market of respectable size already exist which could attract Investment from abroad even for the DOMESTIC CONSUMPTION any export would be a bonus; on the other hand for export sector all of our export Items are those which requires value addition

Its an impression which many people have based on Imran Khan past life but for many its not true as he is the same person who openly after becoming the PM said

- It's better If would have no meeting with Trump If he would say anything [in bad taste] I would reply in same coin then God knows what would happen, because of this craziness both his meeting with Trump went smooth

- He is the same person who openly in US said China is our friend and strategic partner while facing the US media and refused to criticize China for her domestic issues which western media was propagating too much on those days

So just because he has spent a big part of his life in west does not mean he is a westified person in fact he is a sort of a character who is not suffering from inferiority complex against the west you may find very few political personalities in South Asia who might have the same trait.

The max one could say that he is impressed with Western Democracy to the core and unnecessarily pacifist person while dealing with security issues.

It's partly a colonial hang up. The British imported everything from Britain, claiming it to be of superior quality. That idea has stuck around. Across former British colonies stupid people still believe foreign goods to be superior than thier own. I had a Chinese colleague who remarked some Chinese people also suffered from the same mentality. She told me how she'd buy loads of presents for family back home where people had specifically requested British versions even though the same product is available in China for less.

I was watching a YouTube video and saw a traditional Pakistani chair like this...

It's hot in the UK today, we're all sat in the garden on Rattan furniture. Imagine the value our traditional styled furniture could have. These are perfect for warm weather.

No vision.

Thanks for your post.
I watched some IK's interview prior PM position. and it give me an impression his is quite idealistic on westeron ideology. The belief on western so called democracy is destroying many countries, including Arabs world, ASEAN countries, Latin American countries, and South Asia. Western so called democracy is base on tremendous wealth looted for past 200 hundreds of years worldwide, and homogenized nation state, as well as a large amount of middle class.

Imo, unity, stability, economy, social development are much more important than personal political freedom in a diversified society. And those kind of political freedom hurts nation state foundation, even those well established western society eroded. Freedom and democracy are 2 opposite political concepts, which can NOT coexist peacefully.

IK has ambition to improve Pakistan, no doubt about it. But how many years his people can wait for the result? It takes at least a decade to build a working party as the main drive, without a strong party stand behind him, he has to work with existing state machines which is under huge influenced of establishment - group of interest. He just lack the tools to do something significant enough to impress his voters. And the sad thing is voters have no patience.

I in person is a big fan of observing different societies, in different development phrase. I have a conclusion that, once a society jump into western ideology trap, it's very hard to get out. Only huge society crisis may change the destiny of a nation. China was failed nation before 1940s, no one think China can survive the intense security competition, chaos, invasions, civil wars, etc. Totally collapsed. That's my theory.

Yes, I agree with your last point, IK is quite a pacifist. BJP and Modi did NOT take the chance to fix bilateral relationship, in the contrary, BJP and Modi tried to take advantage.
