Yes, Japan had no chance of winning in China without seeking oil supply from Malaysia. But doing so requires her to fight against USA, the premier superpower of the world.

US had done a lot to help China throughout history. US politicians always had a pro China policy (except from 1949 to 1972) because China was always a huge economic partner of US.

1. Imports of corn and potato from US allowed China to triple her population from 150 million to 450 million from 1760 - 1900
2. Prevented European colonialism through open door policy
3. Used Boxer reparation money to build Qinghua University, one of the best in all of Asia.
4. Fought against Japanese war of aggression
5. Prevented Chinese-Soviet war in 1969.
6. Provided technology and aid after 1978.
7. Educated Almost 2 generations of Chinese through American universities.

Blocking Malacca traits wont work, China can use Kra cannal in ur country Thailand (yellow color on the map), so the only weak point for China-JP againt US now is SCS(east sea) where VN control the biggest the the most important part

Kra Canal doesn't exist yet. And Vietnam doesn't have the ability to blockade the South China Sea.
