China forbids Great Famine author from taking Harvard prize
Published February 16, 2016
Associated Press

BEIJING – A former journalist with China's official news agency says he has been blocked from traveling to the United States to accept a Harvard University prize for a 2008 book uncovering the devastating toll of the Great Chinese Famine of 1958-1961.

Harvard's Nieman Fellows in December awarded Yang Jisheng for "Tombstone," a 1,200-page account of the famine -- which he estimated claimed at least 36 million Chinese lives -- and a decades-long government effort to whitewash one of the worst man-made disasters.

Although more recent leaders have permitted, sometimes encouraged, re-evaluation of Mao-era policies, any substantial discussion of national traumas like the Great Famine can be highly sensitive. "Tombstone," for which Yang gained unprecedented access to restricted government archives, has been banned in Mainland China.

Yang said by phone Tuesday that Xinhua had forbidden him to travel. He did not specify how Xinhua would prevent him from traveling or whether his passport had been confiscated, but Chinese retirees often depend substantially on their former employers for benefits and pensions.

Yang successfully left the country in November because he did not inform the authorities beforehand, but "this time I gave them a heads up, that's why I can't leave," he said. He declined to comment further, saying he was forbidden to speak to foreign media.

On that trip, the 76-year-old writer received the Stieg Larsson Prize in Stockholm, which he said he "accepted with grief."

"I grieve for the 36 million starved dead," he said in a speech. "I grieve that this human tragedy that occurred five decades ago is still being covered up, while those who uncover this human tragedy are pressured, attacked and slandered."

Aside from authoring books, Yang worked in retirement at a reform-minded history journal. He quit last year after being pressured by Xinhua party cadres, he wrote in a memo published online.

The news agency did not immediately respond to a fax requesting comment Tuesday.

Chinese are all about harmony. they don't care about the 36 million that was starved to death because of Mao's policies.

36 million deaths is nothing when you have a population of over 500 million back then

the american prizes are an obscenity these days , that's why china did that , taylor swift couldn't hold all the grammy's she won for her crap music ..

Bashing China is a very rewarding business to be in these days. The guy who wrote the book could have ended in jail or worse, shot dead, had he been an Indian for "anti-national". He is lucky that he is in China and China is damn free and safe. His only concern right now is merely if he can get his money, and his personal or family safety was never an issue. By the way, he has embarrassed himself when questioned about his source for the book. But again, the truth doesn't really matter that much when it comes to propaganda needs to suit certain agenda.

Anyway, for those of you who are genuinely interested in this issue and are not willing to be brainwashed, here is a declassified CIA report on this particular subjuct, either CIA fuxked up big time, or this guy is a big liar. Be your own judge.

A classic case of pot calling the kettle black. I've never seen so many oxymorons in a paragraph.

I have Tombstone on my shelf and I read your CIA source. Am willing to doubt have neither.

So what is your point? His book has been discussed to death in China, and I read the debates he had with others, and he was pathetic in those debate. I doubt if you can read any Chinese materials.

That as usual you guys do not read your sources.

Fine...Then let him come to the US to accept the Harvard Award.

.
The US awarded him cause they too dislike the British , so why the ignorance on the part of china ?

If you can come up with a different conclusion from the CIA report, please share with us. Since you are a "professional" here, maybe you have a different way of reading reports?

Personally, I think Chinese Gov should let him go. This award is about the conscientious and integrity of journalist, and I would say he may have the conscientious, but no integrity. The way he estimated and made up data was despicable. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and he obviously did not meet this basic standard. He got this award purely for political reason rather than excellence in journalism.
