2015-10-05 14:43 | Xinhua | Editor: Yao Lan

"Lost in Hong Kong," a Chinese comedy, has raked in 1.33 billion yuan (209.5 million U.S. dollars) by Sunday, becoming the top-grossing 2D domestic film of all time on the Chinese mainland.

The film, released on Sept. 25, is one sequel to "Lost in Thailand," the previous record holder since 2012 which pulled in 1.27 billion yuan.

"Lost in Hong Kong" follows a middle-aged man and his family's trip to Hong Kong, during which the man's secret plan to meet with his high school sweetheart turns into a tumultuous and thrilling adventure.

The film's director and actor Xu Zheng expressed his gratitude to viewers on Sunday in a micro-blogging posting, soliciting continuous support from domestic movie goers.

Chinese films about modern China win big at Chicago Film Festival
2015-10-25 13:37XinhuaEditor: Gu Liping

Emerging Chinese director Song Pengfei could hardly believe that his first try at film directing would turn out to be an immediate success.

At Friday night, amid applause and enthusiasm, Song, director of a movie entitled Underground Fragrance, came to the stage at the Peninsula Hotel, Chicago, a city in the U.S. state of Illinois, to claim Gold Hugo for New Directors at the 51st Chicago International Film Festival. Underground Fragrance is a feature film presenting ordinary people striving to move up in today's China.

Song was joined by Song Zhantao, director of the documentary In the Underground, which tells about the lives of miners in north China's Hebei Province, who won the Silver Hugo Award for the documentary, and Jia Shaowei, producer of In the Underground. The two Songs are not related.

"I'm mesmerized by the film," said Claudia Landsberger, jury of New Directors Competition, referring Song Pengfei's feature film Underground Fragrance."

"When you watch the movie, you can actually feel it, smell it. It's your life there," she said. "When the film ends, you want to know what happened to the people afterwards."

Landsberger said the film tells so much about modern China and it's amazing that such a film is from a new director.

"This is my first film," said Song Pengfei, the director of the feature film. "The recognition will certainly encourage me to continue pursuing my style and themes of interest."

Song Zhantao, director of the documentary In the Underground, said in an interview with Xinhua that he had worked on the film for two years, befriending miners by going down the mine with them and gaining their trust to present their hard but resilient life.

"Seventy percent of energy in China still come from coal, and I want to show the lives and work of miners," said Song Zhantao. "Like everyone else, they want to live a better life."

"These miners may not be well educated and versed, but once underground, they would risk their own lives to save their fellow brothers," Song Zhantao added.

Zhang Ling, a student who is working for her PhD diploma in film studies at the University of Chicago, said she was very touched by the film after attending a screening of the documentary at the Festival.

Zhang mentioned a particular scene in which the miners were eating food delivered underground. The low space barely gave them enough room to sit, and the closeup of their darkened faces, though not showing any emotion, was extremely powerful.

"The camaraderie among the miners is so well presented," said Zhang. "I cried watching the film at the theater." "I was not the only person being moved into tears at the theater," Zhang stressed.

This year's Chicago International Film Festival received more than 4,500 applications but only fewer than 200 films from more than 15 countries were selected for international competitions, including four Chinese films, said Mimi Plauche, Programming Director at the Festival.

The four Chinese films were Hou Hsiao-Hsien's The Assassin and Jia Zhangke's Mountains May Depart, Underground Fragrance by Song Pengfei and In the Underground by Song Zhantao.

Awards at Chicago International Film Festival this year are divided into categories such as: International Feature Film Competition, New Directors Competition, Documentary Competition, Roger Ebert Award, Chicago Award, Q-Hugo Award, and Short Films.

"The 16 films competing for the Gold Hugo are strong and diverse," said Founder & Artistic Director Michael Kutza.

"A Childhood" by French director Philippe Claudel won the Gold Hugo for Best Film in the International Film Competition. "Paulina" from Argentina and Brazil, with Santiago Mitre as director, won the Silver Hugo, Special Jury Prize, and "The Club" from Chile by director Pablo Larrain won the Silver Hugo, Best Director award.

The film festival will run on Oct 15-29 at the AMC River East 21 in Chicago.

A quick way to punish these fraudsters is to tax them at the amount of box office they had claimed!

China's film watchdog targets box office cheats
2015-10-24 14:13 | Xinhua | Editor: Li Yan

China's film watchdog said on Friday it will take further action against box office fraud.

The State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) said more technical measures along with more strict regulation would improve management of cinema ticket sales, with blacklists of wrongdoers made public.

In response to recent news that domestic movies are inflating box office figures, in an interview with China Central Television Li Dong, deputy head of SARFT movie fund commission, admitted that problems still exist in ticket sales .

"Statistics from the nation digital ticketing platform show that a few cinemas and distributors have manipulated viewing figures and sales. For example 300 tickets may be sold in a hall of 200 seats and all tickets sold are counted at full price," said Li.

Li explained that some distributors inflate ticket sales to make a splash in the movie market.

China's film market, now the world's second largest, has been a huge success this year. According to SARFT, cinemas have taken 30 billion yuan already this year, exceeding the 2014 total of 29.6 billion yuan.

Homegrown movies "Monster Hunt" and "Lost in Hong Kong" are claimed to have reaped 2.4 billion yuan (385 million U.S. dollars) and 1.6 billion yuan respectively, but reportedly involved in as yet unconfirmed box office fraud.

China's animated milestone "Monkey King: Hero is Back" by Tian Xiaopeng will land in more than 60 countries overseas, setting a new record for foreign sales of a Chinese made 3D animation.

"Hero is Back" has grossed 956 million yuan (U$150.47 million) in China to become the highest grossing animation in Chinese film history. However, the enthusiasm for it didn't end in China; it’s gone beyond.

"Monkey King: Hero is Back" sold distribution rights for US$4 million in more than 60 countries around the world and was put on the covers of SCREEN and Animation Magazine in early November.

Flame Node Entertainment will deal with the film's overseas distribution. Feng Yi, founder and president of Flame Node, said they have arranged several exhibition screenings for foreign distributors, who were eventually impressed and amazed by the animation's qualities.

Feng said "Hero is Back" is a new voice in the market dominated by Hollywood animation. To get closer to foreign audiences, they also hired an American team to dub the voice for the characters.

Ned Lott, the producer and voice director for Hayao Miyazaki's "My Neighbor Totoro" (2015 Disney version) cast the English voices for "Hero is Back," while Cory Edwards, the script writer for "Hoodwinked!" and "Escape from Planet Earth," helped to rewrite some dialogue lines to make the film more understandable for Western audiences.

The overseas release dates of the film have not been announced yet. According to sales statistics, the Asian countries' distributors have reacted warmly to it since the original Chinese classic "Journey to the West" is still very popular in Oriental cultures.

Four Chinese stars on 100 most beautiful faces
( chinadaily.com.cn ) | Updated: 2015-12-29 10:57:25

Independent film rating website TC Candler has published the "100 most beautiful faces of 2015" on Monday, with South Korean star Nana topping the list for the second year in a row.

Four Chinese celebrities are on the list: actress Zhu Zhu (26th), pop singer Ju Jingyi (53rd), actress Liu Yifei (77th), and TV host Liu Yan (89th). This is the fourth year that Zhu has featured on the list and third for Liu Yifei. TV host Liu Yan and singer Ju Jingyi are newcomers on the list.

Actress Fan Bingbing, who was ranked 66th last year, failed to make the cut this year.

These are the four Chinese celebrities in the world top 100. I know it's subjective, but anyway, here there are.

Chinese film industry’s investment into quality pays off
By Li Jingjing Source:Global Times Published: 2016-1-5 19:13:01

In the year 2015 mainland films seem to have experienced a huge uptick in quality, both in terms of story and production value. This change was widely welcomed by Chinese audiences thirsty for some quality "homemade" films, leading to several new box office records being set this year. In fact there were several Chinese films that actually beat out several heavy weight foreign films as the top earning films of the year, even though films like Furious 7, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Jurassic World came to China this year.

That happened for a reason and proves that the Chinese film industry is becoming a force to be reckoned with.

The year ended up giving mainland audiences several films that I can point to with confidence and say: "You have to watch these because they're awesome!"

Art house films

Deep in the Heart

Director: Qi Yukun

While this film lacked a glamorous cast and a well-known director, this suspense film, Qi's first and costing only 1.7 million yuan ($270,000) to make, was a huge surprise. After the film quietly hit cinemas in October, word of mouth about its solid story and performances soon circulated among audiences, making it one of the top-rated suspense films ever.

The sudden appearance of a burnt corpse disrupts the quiet peace of a small rural village. Soon after more mysteries begin to unravel. The white-haired head of the village comes in to clear up the chaos, but ends up getting involved in a complicated web of deception that is far beyond his control.

Many audience members praised the film's Rashomon-style storytelling and structurally intricate plots.

"It's fortunate to see a director who really used his brain for his first movie," netizen Xiedu Dianying commented on movie.douban.com.

The Dead End

Director: Cao BaopingThis film caused quite a stir when it hit cinemas. Not only was the film from renowned director and screenwriter Cao Baoping, the mind behind previous critically acclaimed art house films The Equation of Love and Death and Einstein and Einstein, it also won Cao the best director award at the Shanghai International Film Festival in August. Meanwhile, the performances of the three leading actors in the film were so good and woven together that the three jointly claimed the Best Actor Award at the festival.

"It's rare to see a Chinese crime film be that good. The case, the depth of the characters and the complex relation between them were all mezmorizing," netizen Taotao Taodianying commented on Douban.

Saving Mr. Wu

Director:Ding Sheng

More attention-grabbing than big-name stars like Andy Lau and Liu Ye was the authenticity of the story. The film depicts the story of how police deal with a criminal over a period of 20 hours to save a star (Lau) who has been kidnapped.

The story is based on the 2004 real life case of actor Wu Ruofu, who plays one of the police officers in the film.

That case was widely talked about at the time, after which, Wu gradually disappeared from both large and small screens. However, Ding spent three months persuading Wu to work on this film about his kidnapping, which only added to its sense of realism.

A number of other art house and indie films came out last year that were not just critically acclaimed in China, but also made it onto shortlists or were awarded at international film festivals such as Cannes.

Due to space limitations, I'll just list them here: A Fool by Chen Jianbin, Red Amnesia by Wang Xiaoshuai, Mountains May Depart by Jia Zhangke, 12 Citizens by Xu Ang and Mr. Six by Guan Hu.

The blockbusters

Mojin - The Lost Legend Photo: CFP

Mojin - The Lost Legend

Director: Wuershan

Just released in December, this film's box office soon launched it to become the 7th highest-earning film of the year in China, beating out Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

Before the film hit cinemas, many wondered how this adaptation of a popular tomb-raiding novel would depict the thrilling scenes from the book on the big screen considering the tight regulatory environment about the supernatural in China. Yet, the director nailed a perfect landing. The film's beautiful scenic designs and special effects have raised the bar for such things in the industry.

Monkey King: Hero is Back

Director: Tian XiaopengThis animated film was probably the biggest dark horse of 2015. The story of the Monkey King has already been done to death in China over the years, yet this film's new approach to the story ended up breathing new life into an old character.

After years of the domestic animation industry suffering endless criticism, finally the mainland has produced a film that has won the hearts of audiences with great storytelling as well as featuring outstanding quality in its animation.

Monster Hunt

Director: Raman Hui

Although not scoring as high as blockbusters such as Mojin - The Lost Legend, it set some impressive records at the box office. It became the first domestic film to earn more than 2 billion yuan, beating out all domestic and oversea films to become the highest earning film of all time in the Chinese market.
