China calls for deeper Asian cooperation in higher education
2010-11-14 12:57:29

GUANGZHOU, Nov.14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Liu Yandong Saturday called for greater cooperation in higher education to enhance Asia's prosperity and development.

Liu made the remarks at opening of the Asian University Presidents Forum, which convened Saturday in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, under the theme "Asian higher education and regional economic and society development."

"To build lasting peace and prosperity and harmony in Asia, it is essential to further expand the depth and breadth of cultural and education communication, and intensify the social foundation of Asian countries with friendship through the generations," she said.

Liu suggested China and other Asian nations should make higher education cooperation a priority and deepen exchanges and cooperation in talent cultivation, science research, social services and cultural transmission.

She called for new channels and content in communication between young people and increased cross-cultural communication ability.

China would welcome more students from other Asian countries to pursue advanced studies at Chinese universities of higher learning and was willing to make efforts to promote Asian higher education development, she said.

More than 80 university presidents from more than 20 Asian countries and regions attended the forum.

The first thing we should do is have a standardized measurement test for admissions from all countries and domestically to ensure the highest quality of graduate education, and secondly we should improve the image of all schools in Asia. Currently, whites have a near monopoly on higher education due to not only good research but due to a better image of their schools.

freeze is right. a friend of mine went to peking for 3 years and she said international students were subjected to lower admission standards which caused a bit of resentment among the domestic students who had to haul a s s to get in. A definite yes on equal standards for domestic and intl. students.

I thought that academic competition in Asia was already fierce enough but China is about to make things a lot more interesting.

This isn't exclusive to China. In the US, a lot of top schools add a modifier to student's SAT scores based on race because they are afraid their school was turning too "yellow" (especially in California).

Yes! A friend of mine who lives and studies in California told me that as well.

Yeah I read about that as well.

It is a much awaited and most required step IMO due to following reasons:

1. High standard education
2. By this Asian talent will get more chances in Asia and we can trap brain drain.
3. It will help to understand each others culture and frequent exchange of thoughts and ideas will help to reduce the bitterness of our hearts and minds.
4. more opportunities and funds will be available to R&D.
