The first power generating unit of 133 megawatts from the Bui hydroelectric project was officially started on May 3, 2013. The project, which is being constructed by China's Sinohydro Corporation, will generate 400 megawatts of power when it becomes fully operational by the end of 2013. Started in April 2008, the project was financed by the governments of Ghana and China at a total cost of nearly 800 million U.S. dollars, with the Chinese government providing 90 per cent of the funds while its Ghanaian counterpart paid ten percent.
