It is like kungflu virus cover up. One fine day(very soon), news will come that dam collapsed but no loss of life. Govt has relocated all the people.

I heard the death rate for covid was covered up in India, dead ddalits were not reported, simply thrown into the forested areas. Lol

1. First point, well, this is China for you. We are a very natural disaster prone country, probably, only second to Japan on this. As for damage, it is as huge as it can be. At least 500k people will have to rebuild their lives from scratch.
   
   As scrawny, and lethargic it is, China does have a disaster relief organisation that will eventually sort this out. With any natural disaster, you can't do much prevention, only amelioration.
   
   The problem now is, in China no nation-scale organisation works properly without a kick from the top. This is the reason every time there is something on this scale happening, you see cadres up the PBSC having to go into the field to "rally the troops" personally to make people acknowledge how dire the situation is. This time... it didn't happen.
   
   
2. Murmurs be murmurs, but I it is the "head into the sand" manoeuvre from the SC that sets everybody off now. Even some separate municipalities are now sending their own relief teams independently of the centre now because of Beijing going silent for many weeks now.
   
   XJP and co. don't have to worry at all about people rioting, China's police is bigger, better trained, and better funded than it's army. It is the party itself they have to be worrying about. If Xi sits in the bunker 24*7, as if his post makes no difference to the party, then people will start scratching their heads, thinking things.
