China Begins Construction of Second International Airport in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today amid religious observances ceremoniously initiated the construction on the country's second international airport at Maththala in Hambanthota.

The new airport will be constructed on a plot of 2,000 hectares in Hambantota district at a cost of US$200 million. The Government of the People's Republic of China provides financial assistance for the project with a soft loan.

President Rajapaksa addressing the gathering said people today are enjoying the benefits of the results taken without bowing down to the powerful forces of the world. He pledged not to change the decisions taken in the interest of the motherland and the people.

Aviation Services chairman Prasanna Wickramasuriya and Chinese officials signed an agreement for the loan facility.

Inaugurating the event the President operated a crane and a Mihin Air plane flew over the site.

According to the Ports and Aviation Ministry, the construction of the airport will be completed in two phases. All basic facilities including runways, taxiways and parking facilities will be completed in the first phase to be completed by 2011.

All other airport and aviation related facilities will be completed in the second phase. These include servicing and repairing centre for aircraft, hotels, pilot training centre, maintenance hub, private jet parking, and technical training centers.

The government plans to commission the airport by the end of 2011 and land the first flight by December 2011

Maybe the government should spend the millions on resettling the tamil refugees instead of spending it on an airport.

It would also stop the Australian Government spending millions each year detaining the tamil refugees that come from sri lanka to our waters.

Any citizen is an ambassador of his country. So, Xukxuk can also talk on behalf of his country.

No he can't. He doesn't have any power to talk on behalf of his country, that's why there is elections, you elect the people who you want to talk for you. Oh well there is no elections in china, so that doesn't really count.

If you claim anyone can talk on behalf of all of there country, i can say Australia declares war on china then?

Thats an excellent news for Srilanka and a trusted hand of friendship from China. Hope this will go long way rebuilding Srilanka.

It seems the new airport will have two runways. What are the lengths of these two, any idea?

Estimated Cost: US $ 210 million

Extent of land: 2,000 hectares in total. Initial construction covers an extent of 800 hectares.

Aerodrome design: Designed to meet the ICAO specification for code 4F.

Runway Length: 3,500 metres in length with a width of 75 metres.

Taxiways: 60 metre long taxiway from the runway centre line to the edge of the apron. Apron: 10 parking positions initially with the total being 80.

Air Field Capacity: Annual Service Volume of the aerodrome at short and medium/long term planning horizons will be 30,000 and 60,000 movements respectively.

Terminal and related buildings: Proposed 10,000 square metres to accommodate 800 peak hours and 100 domestic passengers both ways.
