The Chilean Air Force (Fuerza Aérea de Chile: FACh) has selected the Sikorsky S-70 Black Hawk to fulfil its dual-use medium-lift requirement, a company spokesperson confirmed to IHS Jane's on 7 September.
The service will receive six Polish-built S-70i (international) helicopters that are to be built by Sikorsky's subsidiary, PZL Mielec. According to Sikorsky, contract negotiations will begin later this month with a signature expected before the end of the year.
The Chilean Air Force is to acquire six S-70i Black Hawk helicopters to add to the one S-70 that it received in 1998, as the service seeks to strengthen its medium-lift capabilities. (IHS/Gareth Jennings)
Once fielded, the new helicopters will reinforce the FACh's existing fleet of mainly Bell 412 and UH-1H platforms, and will increase battlefield lift and disaster relief capabilities. While the current plan is to procure just six aircraft, there is the potential for more to be bought at a later date.
