NEW DELHI: Chandrayaan 2, the second mission to moon, could be an Indian programme all the way without any Russian support.

This was indicated by minister of state in PMO V Narayansamy in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.

Chandrayaan 2 was originally envisaged to be a joint mission between ISRO and the Russian Federal Space Agency, Roscosmos.

While ISRO was to provide for the launch of GSLV, the orbiter and the rover as per the agreement, the Russian agency was to provide the lander and the mission was scheduled for the current year.

But, following the failure of the Russian-led interplanetary mission, the Russian agency reviewed their inter-planetary missions.

It consequently suggested ISRO two windows of opportunities for launching of its Chandrayaan 2 rover - either 2015 or 2017 aboard Soyuz, the Russian spacecraft with a rider that the 2015 opportunity could involve mass limitation for the rover and entitle a higher risk.

In the wake of these inputs, the ISRO conducted a high level review of the Chandrayaan 2 programme under the chairmanship of UR Rao.

The study recommended that the India could itself realize a lander module in a few years and that it could go in for the mission on its own.

Narayansamy said the "details of changes in the configuration and the mission profile are under finalization.

He also said the payloads on the lander will be finalized in due course taking into account the weight, volume and power constraints of the lander.

All the best ISRO!

This is so DRDOesque...hope not!!!:cheesy:

nor the problem of ISRO, If ISRO is able to make a lander in 2015, it will be a great achievement.

lol, without foreign direct tech and hardware support, I'd reckon it wont be any moon launch before 2020

if ISRO is confident then it will be able to do that.

well,if we can actualize a lander within 2 years, then there should be no Joint Mission..we should remember the previous Chandrayan mission's experience where USA tried to snatch the glory of discovery of water in Moon...also,the previous recent track records of Russia in this kind of mission isn't too impressive..and their "Review" can lead to several delay..

:omghaha: :omghaha: :omghaha:

Nasa,ESA used our moon mission to launch their payload in MOON...

Chandrayaan 2, the second mission to the moon, would be an Indian programme, without any tie up with Russia.

Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, V. Narayanasamy, on Wednesday confirmed this in reply to a written question in Rajya Sabha.

Chandrayaan 2 was originally envisaged to be a joint mission between ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) and the Russian Federal Space Agency, Roscosmos.

Under the agreement approved by the Central Government in September 2008, while ISRO was to provide for the launch by its workhorse, GSLV, as also the orbiter and the rover, the Russian agency was to provide the lander. The mission was scheduled for the current year.

Frankly speaking no definite timeline given for Chandrayaan 2 . It is back to drawing board. Mission will have to be configured afresh . ISRO will have to build lander itself besides orbiter and rover. Besides launch vehicle for Chnadrayaan 2 is not ready as of today. Hopefully GSLV launch slated after 3 days is resounding success.
Russia had its own reasons. Failure of their joint mars mission with China in which they were supposed to test their lander technology failed . Naturally Russia being a good friend did not want to give unproven tech in this high stake mission. I think it's best thing that could have happened . But lot of things seem uncertain about Chandrayaan 2. We should be looking at 2016 / 2017 for Chandrayaan 2 rather than 2015 .
Let us pray GSLV is successful . We desperately need GSLV if we have to compete with space faring nations respectably. All future missions like space station, manned missions will be stalled without successful, reliable GSLV .

I know that a lot of Indians believe that this should be ready by 2016 to 2017. they would be correct if there is no soft landing in the moon. But because there is a soft landing, its likely push back to 2019-2020. This would not happen if India failed in their GLSV rocket launch. That rocket is still the key to any future Indian space mission.

Indeed ! But what is the hurry ?. India should take its own time . It's not like India is in any kind of Space race . It's possible that the time line be dragged to 2020. But ISRO is a reliable instituition. Success and failures are part and parcel of journey .
ISRO is fully confident that GSLV will work this time - they have toiled for 3 years after last consecutive GSLV failures . But even if this incoming flight of GSLV is successful they will have to test it atleast 2 more times . Another experimental flight of GSLV Mk III slated for next year . Let us see how it goes .

One has to reconcile to the fact that lander is the difficult part for which ISRO most likely has no prior experience . So this is the toughest part of mission. Not only ISRO will have to design and build lander it will have to also test it before incorporating in mission . This is going to take time . Nobody else besides Russia will be willing to give us lander . And why should we even expect if we can do it ourself !!!
