Best position is if an entire river system is under the rule of sovereign authority. Seems the Russians set up the borders to prevent this and encourage infighting. Similarly, the British and Hindu elites would never allow Kashmir or Punjab to go to Pakistan (which made sense from a cultural and geographic prospective). They could not allow Pakistan to control the entire Indus river basin from start to finish.

Asia should mature up by now. These conflicts will only serve the agenda of extra regional nations. Wont be surprise if fires are stoked from thousands of miles away. Ofcourse there are Asian states like India who are poodle of extra regional powers, and needs to sorted out , but rest should focus on mutually beneficial relationships, conflict resolution, regional trade and economic. Just like European model.

This particular issue can put massive spanner in works of regional connectivity. At a time when extra regional nations are getting ejected from Afghanistan, regional nations need to be very careful.
