'CDs, DVDs piracy causes $45 billion loss across world'

ISLAMABAD (December 19 2006): The music, software and motion picture industries suffered $45 billion loss in the year 2005 due to the sale of pirated CDs and DVDs across the world, but appreciate Pakistan's efforts in killing piracy.

This was noted here Monday at a training programme on "Recognition of Pirated and Counterfeit CDs and DVDs" organised by Intellectual Property Organisation (IPO) of Pakistan in co-operation with Microsoft, International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and Motion Picture Association of America (MPA).

Farhan Junejo, License Compliance Manager, Microsoft - Pakistan told the audience, comprising officials from Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), police and Pakistan Customs, that the software industry had to incur $34.4 loss in 2005.

Quoting an international report he said decreasing software piracy by 10 percent over four years would add more than 2.4 million new jobs and almost $70 billion in tax revenues to local governments world-wide. He appreciated the efforts of IPO for fighting piracy in Pakistan.

He pointed out that Pakistan was the sixth largest among the piracy known countries with 86 percent piracy rate. "We have to come out from this situation, because investors closely look at the piracy figures before making any decision to invest." Microsoft, Farhan said, will soon introduce a new Hologram to help people easily distinguish the pirated CDs from the genuine ones.

Regional Co-ordinator, IFPI, Willem van Adrichem told the gathering that after seeing recent positive results by the law enforcement authorities in killing music piracy, the Chief Executive Officers of different companies will visit Pakistan early next year for exploring investment opportunities in country's potential huge market.
