ANKARA - Hürriyet Daily News
Turkeys career military forces will take charge of guarding the countrys borders, particularly near northern Iraq, the Turkish General Staff said Friday.
The decision came one day after the National Security Council, or MGK, reiterated in a meeting its determination in the fight against terrorism and the message of no concession to terrorism.
Military service is mandatory for Turkish men and many of the soldiers who have died in the latest outbreak of attacks have been part of this conscription corps. Yet Turkey also maintains a professional corps, consisting of paid military personnel who serve longer than the conscripted troops.
The General Staff held a routine press briefing Friday commenting on the latest attacks by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, which have killed 19 soldiers and two civilians since last weekend.
Preparatory work has begun to change the border units that entered the agenda following the Gediktepe incident to professional soldiers, General Staff Secretary-General Ferit Güler said, referring to the PKKs deadly June 19 attack on a mobile military unit in Hakkari province.
