Canada’s special forces will be receiving new rigid hull inflatable boats.

The government recently awarded a contract for $1.87 million to Kanter Marine Inc. of St. Thomas, Ontario.

Kanter will produce eight boats for the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command. There will be an option for another two.

The vessels are less than 7.2 metres in length.

In a December 2011 interview with Defence Watch, CANSOFCOM commander Brig.-Gen. Denis Thompson said the boats would be smaller than the RIBs that Canadian special forces currently use.

“It’s all about that transportability, though not on the water because it would be similar in capability as the one currently out there,” Thompson explained. “It wouldn’t carry as many operators obviously but it would allow us transport it, for instance, on a smaller mother ship, a smaller aircraft, and smaller trailers down more tricky roads. It’s just another tool in the tool box.”
