It would be nice if there is a special debate section so that a controlled formal debate can take place. It will be fun and help encourage members to engage in a civilised and intellectual debate.
The debate section can be something like this:
There will be one thread open to all members. In this thread members can call each other out for a formal debate. The debate topic could be anything military, political, economical or historical. If both parties agreed, they can discuss and agree to the rules and terms of their debate. After everything is agreed to, a mod can then open a new thread so that the 2 parties can begin their debate.
The rules and terms of the debate can be something like this:
-Moot point: they make clear what the precise issue or topic is about.
-When it will start and who will make the opening post.
-How many replies each party can post (e. g. 3 replies each). They will post one after another in an orderly fashion.
-The min and max word limits of each replies.
-The time limit each party has to make each replies. It could be anything from 30mins so that the whole debate can conclude within a single day, or up to a few days for each replies if each parties has busy schedules.
-The standard of the debate: can the posts be casual or does it need to reference academic sources, etc.
After each party have made their closing post and conclusion. The mod can then open the thread to other members to make comments. You can even make it more fun by creating a poll to decide who wins the debate, or both parties can ask and pre-arrange a panel of think-tanks or mods to judge the debate. You can even create a profile status to indicate members debate wins/losses.
These formal debate can be 1vs1, 2vs2, 3v3, etc. Some forums even invite other forums for a inter-forum debate. e.g. some PDF members can challenge someone from the Flat earth society for a debate. This special debate section can offer a platform for this controlled and civilised debate to take place.
